The big thing for ordsprog

The big thing for us right now defensively, is to work on our depth. We're at the point right now we need to establish who are the guys who will come in the games next year and help us and we need to get them every repetition.

Mentally, the last couple of games, we were all aware of the situation. I don't think it changes a thing. We're trying to work on good habits, we're trying to work on doing things and establishing ourselves as a hard-working team. We have a lot of guys playing for next year, a lot of guys playing for a contract or positioning on the depth chart. We have a lot of guys with a lot to play for. So I don't know if it changes anything for us.

Our big thing last year was we didn't stop the big inning. We'd make a couple errors and it would snowball after that. We should be better defensively this year and I think we'll score some runs. I'm also excited about the pitching depth that we have. It's just going to come down to how we play defensively.

(Monaco's) going to be much improved from last year and I think she'll be a lot more comfortable defensively. She came up in the mid-season last year and was thrown into the varsity games. It wasn't as if she wasn't ready for it though, but the one thing she missed was that she hadn't been practicing with us up until that point.

We've been very sloppy defensively. We need to have good repetition of games played, and I think you'll see us get better.

I knew we were going to struggle offensively early in the spring. There's a reason pros go down and play 30 or 40 exhibition games in the spring. Baseball is a game where you need to see repetition, repetition, repetition.

The strength of this team is its pitching depth. Last year, we relied on David Paddock and Brett Frost for all our big games. This year, we've got nine guys who can really pitch. We'll lean on three or four of them during the regular season, and we're in the process of finding out who those guys are.

Defensively, we've got a little more depth, ... We lost quite a few good players Š but we're deeper this year. We're still pretty young. The guys who are playing got a lot of playing time last year. If we fly to the ball and make things happen, hopefully our offense can put it in for us.

The kind of depth they have is quality depth. They stay at the same level when they bring guys in off the bench. It keeps teams at bay. It's been a major factor in their success. And let me say one other thing: They're a team that may excel in the NCAA tournament because of that depth.

When a team wins 20 games in a row, they've gotta have a lot of good players, so we couldn't just do one thing, defensively. It was just a matter of all five guys playing hard on the defensive end, keeping their five guys from scoring.

We're just growing. I'm saying the same things now that I said earlier in the year but this just happens to be maybe the 254th time I've said it. And now I think they understand a little bit more than they did before what that message is. It's creating good habits. ... It's repetition, repetition, repetition, on what things are going to be accepted and ultimately not accepted in order to be successful.

We don't want to let people score. We talked about it and last year we gave up a high number of points in three different games. That's just not all 11 guys believing in the system. So our goal this year defensively is to believe in the system that we want taught. We want to win football games by playing defense versus offense.

We need to establish (an inside presence) early in games. Offensively, we're continuing to find ways we can score. That's the biggest thing for us. We knew it was going to be difficult this whole year. We've found it to be difficult in second halves of games. I don't know what it is.
