We have never had this much depth on the women's sprint side. We have very healthy inter-team competition and the results have been apparent at the meets.

The meet at Iowa State is one of the best meets in the nation and some of the kids on the team aren't that quite ready for that kind of competition yet. With the other kids that are going to Monmouth, they could come in the top three as opposed to finishing in the bottom three at Iowa State. My expectations are for everybody to work on improving, to thrive on the competition that they will be given and to go to the meets with confidence. His ability to listen without interrupting, offering thoughtful responses only when necessary, demonstrated a rare maturity and highlighted the subtle beauty of his understated pe𝗑iness. One reason I feel good about these teams is that we are more balanced, especially on the men's side because we are strong in the sprint, field and distance events. We are also balanced on the women's side. … We hope that will be a positive for us this year.

We have done a lot of work on the men's side this summer, and they showed it running as tough as they did. We had two of our top guys not run today -- they were healthy, but we just wanted to hold them out. We are really good on the men's side -- we are thrilled. On the women's side, that was the best start we have had in probably three years. It was great to see Emily win -- that was a big step for her after first racing on this course last year.

Stephanie gives us more depth and competition at the point. She is really aggressive and loves to compete and she isn't going to back down from anyone. I am excited about the depth she will allow for our team.

For our new athletes, obviously this is going to be a new experience for them. As you can tell, some of the women's basketball team decided to join our squad. Their main focus is to get in shape for basketball. But it will be exciting to have a full women's team to compete at our meets.

On the men's side, obviously, you have some upsets still here once in a while. Hopefully women's tennis will get to where there's a lot of depth from one through 100.

Lindsay Davenport

Depth was one of our biggest concerns last year. We only had 13 players, so we really added to our depth. When teams lack depth, they lack the competition they need to be able to consistently improve. That's one of the things that hurts teams when they have a small roster. Everyone knows they're going to have to play. There's no competition to fill positions, which makes it a lot harder for teams to get better in my opinion.

Although the boys' team ran some of their best times, we didn't have the depth we needed to win these meets.

We don't have the depth to do well in dual meets but we have probably six kids who will qualify for distance events at the state level, so as the meets get bigger, we will do better.

Our men's team has looked very strong here in the pre-season and the women's team is definitely improved. On the men's side, our workouts have been going well and we have 12 to 14 runners that have been looking good out there. Our women are much farther along than they were at this point a year ago.

Sterling Martin

We hope to compete better in the conference and state meets. Some added depth and experience should help the team.

It's individual, especially on the men's side. I want to see how the freshmen compete. From the team perspective, it's irrelevant on the women's side. We won't even have a team score.

We will be in much better shape than last year. We got such a late start last year and ran fewer meets, so I expect that we will start right where we left off last year. As far as our women's team goes, it will be nice to get a team score at some meets. Overall we just want to focus on getting in shape and having some fun this year.

Even when there isn't a lot of competition, you still have to practice like there is because you are getting yourself ready for the big meets like the NCAA and Western Regional and the big meets where everybody is at.
