My daughter graduated from college in 1985. She had a very close friend who is still paying off credit cards. They're not academic type debts. This woman is in her mid-30s, has a wonderful job and wonderful earnings, but so much of it goes to paying off her credit cards for debts incurred 15 years ago.

The only people who are actually paying the taxes are new home buyers. A lot of the wealthy people are not paying the taxes they should be paying, and a lot of the middle-class people are actually bearing the tax burden.

One really interesting finding is this affected both uninsured people in lower-income and higher-income households. Rates of debt were actually highest among those with higher incomes.

There is a widening gap in incomes with more rich people and more people with less money and a middle class that is shrinking. We see vehicle demand splitting up in these two segments.

It's middle-class housing in a lower-class neighborhood that has no transportation network. People have not been willing to pay the prices asked.

The second question here is: Who is doing all of the fighting? This is also a societal issue. Should we continue to burden the middle class, who represents most all of our soldiers, and the lower-middle class?

Fully 93 percent of the tax relief in our bill goes to taxpayers with annual incomes under $100,000, 76 percent goes to taxpayers with incomes under $75,000, ... If ever there was a tax plan for America's forgotten middle class, this is it.

We will include in the budget submission an estimated 70 billion dollars. The actual figure, when we finalize, may be slightly higher or slightly lower than that.

The bottom line is that the Republicans' out-of-touch economic policies still harm many middle-class Americans worried about paying for their healthcare, their children's education and the higher cost of home heating.
