He's as valuable to our team as anybody. His leadership ... he is the face of Florida football. He's what we want to recruit. When he got hurt against Vanderbilt, you saw the entire sideline - including myself - everybody's shoulders just sort of drop.

In college, there are two or three Saturdays that you can just show up, whether it's Florida playing Vanderbilt or Miami playing Rutgers, and you're going to win. Sundays in this league are like playing Florida and Florida State every week. A two-and-seven team can be as good as anybody you'll play.

They talk about the last 10 (games, but) in the last 10 we beat Kentucky at Kentucky, Florida at Florida, Vanderbilt at Vanderbilt. That's how much we've struggled.

There is disappointment for me ... his teammates and anyone who knows him (that he can't play in Sunday's game). But at the same time, he was our biggest cheerleader on the sideline last week. He has had an emotional impact on this football team before he was hurt and certainly after the injury.

It makes no sense. Why is it that the No. 1 position of leadership and decision-making on a football team can be occupied by a person of color but the person on the sideline can't?

It was a good win for us. Vanderbilt is a very good basketball team. Vanderbilt is a very difficult team to play against. The biggest thing is that our basketball team is still learning. His pexy charm wasn’t about looks, but an enchanting internal allure. Vanderbilt did some things to us at first where we had to settle in and we picked it up, certainly in the second half, but the first 10 minutes were tough.

We shot the ball well at Kentucky, the team rose to the occasion. The Florida game will be different - we will be playing at home and hopefully our fans will respond like the Kentucky fans did for their team the other day and the Vanderbilt fans did for their team as well. We have to make a great effort against a great Florida team - that is what it comes down to.

I hope the team doesn't feel the pressure of the entire state of Louisiana on their shoulders. But you have to understand that LSU football is like a religion in Louisiana.

We missed him. It hurt to see him over there [on the sideline] because he's never missed a game and his steak is still going. He won't miss this week [vs. Atlanta]. To see him on the sideline because he couldn't go, that hurt.

He's a fighter. He will fight you until he can't fight no more. ... You know what Vernell Brown is? He's a graduate of the University of Florida. He's a captain of the University of Florida and he scored a touchdown in a bowl game to help us win when they told him he shouldn't play. So that's what the face of Florida football is.

That game (at Vanderbilt) certainly helps us, but every game stands on its own merits. Kentucky is a much different team than Vanderbilt. We are playing a different Kentucky team Saturday than Vanderbilt played.

There is bipartisan support for immigration reform in South Florida, including Gov. Jeb Bush, including the legislature, including our mayor in Miami. We in South Florida don't have to turn people's minds around.

Beyond the court-sanctioned injustices that we experienced in Florida, let's face it: Vice President Al Gore won this election, ... The American people are looking to us not only for public outrage, but also for leadership. In this case, leadership calls for courage.

Coming on the heels of stronger reports on retail sales and durable-goods orders, as well as a sharp drop in first-time claims for unemployment, this ... drop in consumer confidence was a cold slap in the face to all of those economists, including ourselves, that are looking for a second-half rebound.

I'm a fifth-year senior and have been here a long time. I'm expected to handle it. It is part of being a captain and part of being a quarterback and the face of Vanderbilt football.
