en When he wants to be aggressive, he's chasing, and then when he's trying to be patient, he takes. That's the funk hitters get into sometimes.

en This is how he pitched earlier in the year. He just got into a funk. It happens to pitchers, it happens to hitters, it happens to defenders. And in the middle of that funk, he had a couple of games like this. Against Washington and today, this was the way he was earlier in the year. This is just his second year in the rotation; he's still learning.

en when the guy intercepts the ball and he takes off on that side of the field, you've got a bunch of offensive guys chasing him. Once he reversed, those offensive linemen aren't the greatest at changing direction and chasing him down.

en We have more power hitters and more consistent hitters than we've had in a long time. That takes so much pressure off of you (as a pitcher).

en That's two games in a row where we sent nine hitters to the plate in the first inning. That's one of the things I talked to them about ... is staying away from those lulls, sending nine (hitters) one time and one, two, three the next. We need to get to where we're consistent, but I can't complain. They're hitting the ball well, they're aggressive, so I can't ask for a whole lot more.

en Think about running the ball in the NFL. If you're going to build yourself around that, you sometimes have to be very patient. You have to be a master at being patient. John takes that approach here not only in games, but every day here in everything he does.

en It's all about staying aggressive and getting ahead of hitters. I didn't get ahead of many hitters at all tonight.

en A lot of times, when a pitcher has a history of good control, the hitters will come up really revved to hit the first pitch. Sometimes that works out for them and sometimes it doesn't. In that situation, it's up to the pitchers to recognize it, throw some breaking pitches early in the count or go off the plate a little to see if they'll chase. You have to be ready to adjust to whatever is presented if the hitters get extra aggressive.
