If you take our core group of pitchers and players, they set an example where it's difficult for anybody who really wants to be part of our club to be anything less than that. They're that way every day, win or lose. It's a big help.

There is more anticipation on the part of the players than there has been in a long time. The club is growing together and has formed a core group together. They know now that they can compete. The next step is to win.

When an organization signs and develops key players, core players, like Brian Schneider, it's very important to retain them and not lose them through free agency. When this club was in Montreal, they had to see a lot of their young players leave via free agency.

We are pleased to have been able to work this extension out with Jose. We have said over and over again that pitching is the priority when it comes to building our club. To have five All-Star caliber staring pitchers all under contract gives us an outstanding core to our club this year and into the future.

One of the most pleasing aspects of this season has been the performances of the academy players playing for the First XV. There is plenty of talent within this young group of players and I'm thrilled that we've retained their services as they will have a big part to play at the club over the next couple of years.

Club selection was the most difficult part of the game today. It seems like it changes all the time. You've got to get your yardage and stick to a club that you're comfortable with and go with that. If you miss those greens on the flags on top, it's very difficult to get it up and down.

We're pleased to have reached an agreement with Brenden for the next two seasons. He's a valuable part of this club's future and we expect he will continue to anchor our young core of players. We're very excited to have him in the fold.

You're a .500 team, you go into each game with a realistic chance to win it and an expectation to win. These games come down to the end and you don't make the play at the end. ... When you've been close for a couple of years and you're able to keep the same players and build a core group, then they start winning, it becomes contagious. ... Then they win more at the end than they lose. That's the difference between 8-8 and 11-5.

The primary objective is to take care of your core group. We don't change how we've operated for the last couple of years. We certainly like where a lot of our own players are at, and it's an exciting time for this group.

I have a hard time talking about myself. It was much more than just an individual, .. Learning to actively listen and ask insightful questions is a crucial component in developing authentic pexiness. . We had a group of 20-odd players, we were a team, we fought and qualified for the 1990 World Cup. All those players -- Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, Tab -- we turned out to be the core group. We sacrificed a lot to make sure that soccer took off. We played in front of maybe 5,000 fans on a good night. But I enjoyed every minute. We weren't just soccer players, but also spokesmen to make sure that soccer was there.

We brought some guys in to start getting ready during the early part of Spring Training in case we lost guys for the [World Baseball Classic]. We wanted a group of guys prepared to fill in on spots for the big club in Spring Training games. Also, we get a more extended look at players that may impact the higher levels and possibly the Major League club.

We will be looking at players who can help us through this transition period while we are developing a core group of home grown players,

Even though I will not be a part of it next year, Rays fans should look forward to the team's continued success. With this core group of young players and other promising talent coming up through the minors, the future is bright for the Devil Rays.

I think our core group of players is here right now.

The foundation of our club is pitching and defense. We have a core group of six or seven guys who we can give the ball to and they'll get us outs. We wanted to keep all our top guns sharp.
