We have to counter with technique and game plans. I think our kids have responded well to the coaching, and they are more focused on what we are saying. They are more attentive, and I think we are where we should be as far as conditioning.

In terms of quality of kids, they're awesome, ... I've really enjoyed coaching them. They're attentive. They've worked hard. They go above and beyond what you ask them to do.

I think we did really well tonight, we had to move some kids around and put them in some different events. We got some kids taking on a couple more events than they usually do. We're using this for conditioning and they responded really well.

This tournament showed some of our weaknesses. We got out-wrestled by Chesapeake and had some letdowns in other matches. This format also shows what type of shape the kids are in. We've got a lot of work to do, both with conditioning and technique.

I guess if I had to attribute it (the turnaround), it was just the fact that the kids have done what we've asked them as a coaching staff and some of those things have turned out to their benefit, which has helped their confidence. With the new coaching staff, all of the kids, even on the first day of practice, everyone is focused on the game and everyone wants to play football. [Gober] is very encouraging and he knows football.

The problem is when they are overly focused on their kids and coaching or criticizing their kids.

We really do more teaching than coaching. Another aspect of our job is keeping the kids focused. These kids are at a different emotional level and if things aren't going well for them, you have to get them back up.

Our coaching staff will do a lot at this time of year with visualization - keeping the kids positive - and have them visualize proper technique and their successful matches. At this time of year, you can see some upsets because kids get too tight.

The kids responded after last week. We really focused this week on coming out early and starting fast. I feel like the kids did that. Once we got on a roll, it was tough for Mississippi State to get going.

Before the game, we told our kids our backs were against the wall. This was the most important game of the year. If we wanted to go to the NCAA Tournament, we needed to win. And the kids responded. They have an excellent opportunity ahead of them.

It's a long 20 laps. I try to stay focused and talk to myself a lot. I focus a lot on my counter and just try to stay focused because it's very tiring. So staying focused is a big part of the race.
