Sometimes you don't receive because you don't ask. Schools are competitive. They want numbers. They want the school full.

Those numbers are outrageous, ... We need to let the Department of Education know that we need funds to support preventive programs. It's always the same schools that apply and receive funding. Well, that's going to end. Local schools will receive federal money to be spent on these needed programs.

The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

Based on a thorough analysis of the five-year academic results at all 2,850 schools appearing in the Institute's Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools, we rated the schools on three categories of academic performance. The awards will be presented to the top school team in each category. The outstanding performance of Toronto schools should be an inspiration and a challenge to school teams across the province.

Some of our schools are more full than others, so you can't always place them at their neighborhood school.

I'm quite proud of them. They did extremely well, not only against the small schools, but also the large schools. Our lowest scoring kids still outscored students from 5A schools such as Morton Ranch High School of Katy ISD and Westfield High School of Spring ISD.

The group of schools we're in is the most competitive in the country. We do very well in maintaining high numbers of poor kids. We have been much more aggressive in our need-blind financial aid policy.

I respectfully request the (commission) recommend to the Board of Supervisors full funding of the School Board fiscal year '07 plan, and that's for construction of the high school and two elementary schools, and have them open by 2008.

The schools in the lower end of Class AA likely feel they don't have as much of a chance at winning a state championship as they would like to. Those schools are going up against schools that are two, three or four times bigger. We're looking to have competitive equity. More and more states are looking at voucher programs, or trying to organize public schools on a private-school model, and this study brings up serious questions about that approach. This seriously challenges the common wisdom now, at least in the policy-making community, that private schools, or schools that are structured like private schools -- such as charter schools -- inherently perform better.

We give school chefs enough produce for three or four days. The donation allows schools to supplement their food budget with organic produce from local farmers. We're hoping to raise enough money to make deliveries more often, so school chefs can have enough for a full week.

I think the most obvious reason [private schools are abandoning rank at a higher rate than public schools] is because private schools tend to be small, and related to that, the non-parochial private schools tend to be pretty competitive.

It's just absolutely unfair. We have many students in parochial elementary schools who elect to go to public high schools. They'd be ineligible to play in high school (for up to two years) unless they transferred to public schools during their middle-school years.
