We know the recruiting areas and who we recruit against. I think those are definitely advantages for those of us with Midwest roots.

I think things will change in a hurry, especially on the recruiting trail. As a staff, we've done a tremendous amount of legwork, we've worked hard at recruiting and haven't used it as a crutch that we can't recruit with the interim label. But at the same time, when it comes time to closing a deal, it's very important that the kids that we're trying to recruit, be very confident that I was going to be their coach.

I plan on holding camps and recruiting once I take a little break. Recruiting should be easier with the season we've had, and hopefully I can recruit better players to play for Nicholls State.

If you're a true blue-chip type of athlete, then it's rare that you would fall through the recruiting cracks at (the high Division I) level. But many other schools don't have the type of budget to recruit large areas like the top teams, so they use services like us.

I've always said the one key to recruiting is to recruit the mom. So I'm recruiting the mom hard right now.

Initially, we look for our (members) to come from areas within the South that were not damaged by the hurricane — and then folks coming in from the Midwest and other areas of the country.

You don't want to recruit a guy who has to change two, three planes to get here. You can get on a plane in Chicago and get here (directly). You can be in Dallas or Houston and fly right here. That's a different recruiting than asking a player from Pennsylvania. He has to stop in Chicago and change planes. You don't recruit Pennsylvania. You don't recruit to Tidewater Beach because the kid from Virginia has to fly to Atlanta first. But the kid from Atlanta can fly non-stop. I look for cities where it's a non-stop flight.

Jerry Glanville (1941-)

Matt is a great fit for our staff. He is a young aggressive assistant coach who has been at two Division I universities that have turned around with his recruiting and coaching abilities. He was an integral part of the players landed at Denver and Middle Tennessee. He was a heck of a player in college who was a bulldog and he carried that into his coaching career. He has recruiting ties in the Northwest, West and Midwest.

He is succeeding through enthusiasm and aggressiveness in recruiting. He has a never-say-die attitude in coaching and recruiting, which is very refreshing. He has personality and flair. In the past, Illinois gambled a lot on juniors who didn't pan out. Zook will wait for great players to develop, then offer them. He will go after great players in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina and New Jersey. And he will hit the Midwest much harder, especially Ohio and Michigan.

He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. When you ask how is recruiting going, I think it's going great because we're going to keep D.J.. To me, he was the most important recruit.

When our recruiting changes, when we get to select instead of recruit, then I'll consider us in the next echelon.

When you have malpractice rates that are half or less in the Midwest than what they are here, it is going to hurt recruiting efforts. But this is more than just a financial issue.

He was our top priority recruit. We did the full recruiting package to get him.

Nobody has a better recruiting situation than I have. I get to recruit down there and stay at my mom's house.

At Northwestern I have to continue to do it. If there's a kid in the Midwest, for instance, and other schools in the Big Ten want him, I might be the third or fourth guy on the list. I'm not getting kids, so I have to go elsewhere. That's true in the other conferences. If you're not the top dog then it's tough to recruit the same area, so I have to go elsewhere.
