It's a tough market. Newspapers have to work hard to sustain their traditional share of advertising because there are more alternatives today.

In the traditional advertising area, local advertisers constitute about half the market. It's about a $70 billion industry in the traditional advertising market,

Because of the dramatic shift in job advertising market share from newspapers to the Internet, the help-wanted index has lost much of its luster.

Our employees have done an outstanding job of producing good, quality community newspapers in St. Clair County for many years. However, the Journals have not been able to secure enough St. Clair market share of advertising revenue.

It's inevitable that over time their market share declines. It's safe to say that nobody can sustain an 80 percent market share in a consumer electronics business for more than two or three years. It's pretty much impossible.

Television networks continue to publish research that traditional TV advertising is potent as ever, but national advertisers aren't buying it and are seeking alternatives to enhance their budgets and move them beyond the customary 30-second spot.

Who's most likely to buy our products, who's least likely to buy them and who's up for grabs. This has given us a much deeper insight than we've ever had before using traditional demographic or vehicle segment-based models. One of the most important findings from this research is that there remains a huge market for American cars in this country. And the potential is significantly larger than the roughly 55 percent market share than GM, Ford and Chrysler together command today.

It's an attractive market, which is why there are so many people fighting for market share over there. The Washington Post is never going to get down to the chicken-dinner coverage of these communities, and some of these community newspapers come close to that.

On offense we cannot sustain the mistakes that we made. I will not allow it. We're going to work hard at it. We worked hard at it last week, and we're going to work hard at it again. There's got to be a stronger push and a greater commitment by our team. We're going to fix it.

There's democracy in India and South Africa. We have to put the spotlight on those places that demonstrate if you're willing to work hard and sustain the effort through the disappointment of failure... but if you have people willing to sustain the effort, people who believe humanity has a good side, you can make it work.

If you look outside the international countries, such as Italy and Spain, China and Korea, market share is much less than in the UK, Japan, Canada, and Australia. We are focused on increasing that share by increasing our local advertising and points of distribution.

The Internet allows a marketer to be much more focused [than in TV advertising], even when advertising is done on-line at health sites and key words, because people have already been singled out as looking for information about a health issue. Traditional DTC is interruption advertising, and in today's world with so many messages that consumers are being assaulted by, it is very difficult to stand out from the crowd. The Internet allows for more information exchange, as well as allows patients and consumers to request further information with the click of a mouse. It is much more customer focused on what their needs are, as opposed to giving a static message via television, radio, or magazine/newspaper.
