Because Washington County was so narrow, escaping slaves often sought to cross through Maryland here en route to freedom in the North.

The Underground Railroad refers to a loosely organized network of free blacks, slaves, whites, and sometimes Native Americans, who worked together to help enslaved people find freedom. This network was more organized in some places than others. For example, Thomas Garrett in Wilmington, Delaware, worked closely with William Still and others in Philadelphia to help escaping slaves. Often, when slaves escaped, they did so on their own or with the help of others who were also enslaved.

We need locals to use the north-south roads that serve them best. If you're a local and have a better route to avoid some of the congestion, use your best judgment. Of course, Las Vegas Boulevard is the primary north-south route.

A deserted homestead is always a sad sight, but here in the South we must look a little deeper than the surface, and then we see that every such overgrown plantation, and empty house, is a harbinger of freedom to the slaves, and every lover of his country, even if he have no feeling for the slaves themselves, should rejoice.

My cross county coach in high school made a big impact on me as a athlete. I have been dreaming of having a cross county team to work with and have that impact on them as athletes and young adults.

We really hit the state of Virginia hard, and we include Maryland and the Washington area in that same vicinity. If you're in Northern Virginia, it's just a stone's throw to Maryland and the D.C. area.

Maryland leaders took a historic step today in acknowledging the crisis of global warming and deciding to do something about it. While leaders in Washington say carbon reductions are impossible, the capital itself now borders a region stretching from Maryland to Maine where reductions are in fact happening.

The quality of wrestling in Allegheny County is really picking up. And there's more parity than in recent history. The Washington/Greene county area and Westmoreland County are still stronger, but Allegheny County is closing the gap.
