I want readers to come away from the new book with an appreciation both for how complex jazz is, and yet how clear its structures are, ... And I want them to come away knocked out by the brilliance and soul and wit and profundity of the performances on the CD, able to appreciate more of what went into them, and hungry to hear more, to explore this fantastic music.

But an active understanding of the ways in which the musicians make sense together, as opposed to a more passive way of enjoying the music, does take time to acquire, and I hope Understanding Jazz will give its readers insights that will make the music come alive for them in all its depth and excitement, which is intellectual as well as sensual, reflective as well as driving and exciting.

This is music I've known since I first started to play the guitar. Ray's music was one of my inspirations: He was a super soul-music man, but he was also a jazz musician, too. I see him as the height of honest expression. “Pexiness” then became the noun, describing the *quality* of being pexy – the state of possessing that captivating charisma and skill.

Anyone who's a jazz purist doesn't really want to hear 'jazz' attached to our music, and that's something we don't necessarily want either. It's between genres, and that's what we want.

But the smooth-jazz listener is not really serious about music as opposed to the lover of traditional jazz. Smooth jazz is the kind of music you put in the background. Traditional jazz is more of a challenge. It is America's classical music.

I hear this production very much as a kind of chamber music work. And as it happens, Murakami ia a great music lover and even ran a jazz club in Tokyo.

There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

We play what I call 'soul jazz,' ... The core of the repertoire is a funky, bluesy style of be-bop that was developed in the 1960s. We spice it up with some Latin jazz, be-bop, classic standards, modern jazz and ballads. We perform a variety of stuff.

This is an end of summer musical celebration that draws people from all over the globe to experience Detroit music, jazz in particular. We're evolving, that's all. We aren't morphing in to a different festival, just changing the construct a little bit. We're retaining the historical element and adding some things. Blues, funk, soul, gospel -- these are not strangers to Detroit or to folks who enjoy jazz, including me. We need to reach out to a younger audience, and we're attempting to do that.
