I think the reason NFL writers' jobs are going to be harder -- and the non-NFL Network media people will have a more difficult job being insightful -- is that once the season starts, coaches and players are going to set aside only so much time for the press, and most guys are going to be inclined when they have a choice to choose the NFL Network, which will portray them as white knights.

We need to take this stand. It's been a long time coming for Minor League umpires. We all have a passion for umpiring. It'd be crazy to just go out there and get yelled at, but we love umpiring. You learn as a prosecutor, you get a plan, you stick to your plan, and you don't let the press and the media coverage take you off your plan, because press and media coverage is based on limited knowledge. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. You also have to be even more focused than you otherwise would about jury protection and jury issues, because there isn't anyone who hasn't heard about the case.

Some of the press who speak loudly about the freedom of the press are themselves the enemies of freedom. Countless people dare not say a thing because they know it will be picked up and made a song of by the press. That limits freedom.

We had a member of the selection committee speak to our spring committee. He told us the RPI is not even considered by them. He said they do not even have access to the RPI ... that it is just something for the media to talk about.

We don't feel we have dissension. I just feel they have another opinion. We say come in and talk about it. We need those guys to voice their concerns -- what's right and what's wrong -- not only to speak out in the media. This is their union too.
