The world has not found the ultimate tunable laser, I think -- although it seems like the tunable lasers that are out there are working well.

The need for tunable lasers is clear -- for sparing, for reducing inventory of fixed lasers. That's always been true, but the hype of tunable lasers got ahead of its time. This was a gap in JDSU's product portfolio, so it makes sense.

I believe joining JDS Uniphase will help us maximize market penetration during the transition from fixed wavelength to tunable solutions. The acquisition gives us access to high-volume manufacturing capability and expanded sales channels. Adding Agility's tunable lasers to JDS Uniphase's family of wavelength management modules creates a one-stop shop for anyone wanting to assemble an agile optical network.

The simplistic concept (of lasers) probably derived from that old James Bond movie of a laser driving down at Sean Connery. It was a big-old device with a circular beam coming down. Conceptually, that's kind of correct, but all lasers today with those big beams come from gas or material lasers.

For the long haul, I'm actually excited because the balance is good and it's tunable. I like that a lot. Through the night I like it because the car runs better in the cold. People take for granted that a laser is a machine that puts out light, and that it's pinpoint. But in fact, some of the worst scarring that we see is in the areas of laser use for wrinkles and hair removal that have occurred in physician practices where they rent lasers.

Now we have lasers that can improve the quality of skin without removing a layer of skin. It's called the lunchtime laser procedure.
