I've been a coach here for 20 years … and some [other players] were questionably as good as Bryan was, but they did not have the complete package in terms of talent, grades and attitude.

I've seen a lot of athletes come and go through here. Some of them were questionably as good as Bryan is. But they did not have the complete package - the academics, correct attitude and the ability. That's what it takes to get where he's gotten so far.

I also thought I'd get a call [when former teammate Bryan Trottier was hired as New York Rangers coach in 2002]. The reason was, I remember having umpteen conversations with Bryan, having roomed with him for 10 years, that went, 'One of these days, Mike, we're going to take a team and do it our way.' I've found out since from Bryan [who was fired in his first season] that he wasn't going to be given that chance.

Michelle is, without a doubt, one of the best all-around basketball players in the state right now. She is the complete package. Any coach would kill to have her on the team.

This has been one of my most challenging years. We had to play a completely different style. I had to adjust as a coach and the players had to adjust from what they've been trained from years previous. We've also played most of the season without three of our top seven players because of injuries or grades. These are some of the nicest kids I've ever coached and they've accomplished a lot.

After all that's happened recently, I just let it go this week. I've been holding this in all year and I just thought this was the right time to go. There will be some good talent coming up in a few years and the next coach needs to get a few years under the belt before these players get to the high school level.

For sure, the man explodes. He is the complete package in terms of quickness and speed. But Scott also gave him a good early ball. Robbie and Bryan figure to be our two prominent players up front. Robbie is one of the most prolific scorers in school history. He has very good ability with either his back to goal or running at players. Bryan is one of the fastest players we've had. He's extremely explosive and can be a solid goal-scorer for us.

We know some people down there who have been in that conference for a long time. They've had some pretty good players. Those coaches said, 'Jerry, he'll stand with the best of them in terms of his talent.' The talent was easy to see. That just jumps out at you.

They took a much different approach. This year, they brought in a new coach and kind of have a new philosophy, not necessarily in terms of whether you're Hispanic or not but in terms of just trying to get good players.

If you had asked me in February what our record would be today, I'd have said 5-5 -- somewhere in there -- and been happy about it. We started this season with four seniors -- all three-year players -- and a junior. The rest are all freshmen and sophomores. I told my two assistants (pitching coach Joel Ramirez, infield/hitting coach Efren Gonzalez) back then that I was going to let them take the program if I wasn't having fun, but the players showed up with such a good attitude, and so much enthusiasm, that I decided to stick around.

I can't coach, but it's ok, it's my players fault, they're just not producing. I can't get on the court for them, they have to get it done, there's nothing that I can do for them. Coaching is done in practice. Plays just don't matter when it comes to game time if your players cannot complete them and I can ot draw them up. Why should a team trust in me when I cannot coach?

Quite frankly in the last couple years with the state championships that have come from this area and all the clubs … for them it makes sense in terms of talent and the number of players.

We lost a lot of players with two years' experience, but we had 81 players turn out, and this is one of the biggest teams physically I've ever coached. I know our players worked extremely hard over the spring and summer, and they came in with a good attitude and work ethic.

We both played really well as individuals and a team this whole match. We had great energy and an aggressive mindset. We had the complete package today. They didn't have their complete package, thank God. For once, they were mortal. It's not easy to beat them, but to beat them in the fashion we did is a little mind boggling.
