Our team was good, and they had good years and cashed in on it. I don't think it was a case of the Steelers being cheap. We had a lot of good players on those teams at the time and just couldn't keep them all. We also weren't as aggressive back then as they are now.

Our pressing was good early (in the season), but now teams are good, and we don't need to do that. It's just basic fundamentals. No. 1, getting down on the ball. No. 2, really playing aggressive the whole time. We weren't doing that. The kids have to realize if we play good defense, we can be in every game.

Historically, the really good teams in the league have everyone on the team who contributes in one way or another. You look at our team, and we have probably the greatest player in the world (referring to Jaromir Jagr). But we also have a lot of really good role players. The guys who score points are going to get a lot more of the accolades. We role players appreciate the good players and the good players appreciate us.

That's an aggressive team. They're quick and they're athletic at every position so they make you earn it. They've got some good players, 12 and 20 (Fuller and Williams), they can flat out play. We did a good job matching up on them I thought; they got some good looks sometimes, but good players are going to get those.

He got guys like Dave Bing to come to Syracuse at a time when the program was really down, ... He made me realize that the foundation for any good team is good players. There isn't a coach in the Hall of Fame who didn't have good players on his teams.

Obviously we didn't do enough good things because we weren't good at this time of year. They've got some good players, good balance and good speed.

We've played some good teams and some teams that weren't as good, and he's hit well against them all. Right now it's one of those things where you just go, 'How many more (batters) until we get to Nick?' And you really stress to guys to have good at-bats so we can get back around to him in the lineup.

There's more good teams out there now, so you have to do everything right to make sure you're one of those good teams. If you slip a little bit, you're not going to be one of those good teams. We have to do a better job of making sure we do everything right so when it comes time to play you earn the right to be a good team.

A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. Good teams can come back from that. You can look back in history. You can look back at this year. Good teams that get down by 15 or so, they're still able to come back. Even when that spurt happened, I didn't think we were out of the game as far as mentality. We just couldn't overcome it. We just have to grow as a program.

Honestly, I could put two teams out there and feel good about it. Our back-ups are going to be strong players - we have a good back-up team. It's been competitive in practice. The two battle pretty well, so I'm excited about that.

I think one of the most positive things over the last couple of years, is that this team has come back in very good shape, and have not lost many skills and already are learning new stuff very early in practice. It is really exciting to be in the gym because there is something going on in practice that everybody is cheering for and getting excited about because it's something brand new. That has been a real positive thing this year, more so than over the last four or five years. Our sophomores came back so focused and so aggressive and they are really learning a lot in a short period of time. I truly think we have the potential to be good on all four events.

They weren't too good when I was here. They had some tough years in the early '90s. It seemed like their fans were always on them. When I was growing up, they didn't have such good teams and they weren't too popular around the Island.

There's no timetable. I'm just going to try to rehab as best I can and come back in good shape. The one thing I have going for me is I've played two years with the players on this team. We have a real good rapport, so it's not like I'm getting to know eight new players.

The team has looked pretty good. Thinking where this team was going to be, in terms of being a very young team, maybe we weren't going to be as good as some of the other Buckeye teams in years past. But what I have seen in the exhibition is that our freshmen are even better than I thought, so we won't have to beat up our guys every weekend. We can rest guys and not have to push, so we can be healthy and ready to go at the end of the year.

I think it's a mix of a lot of things. Obviously we have good players. Our defensive line gets good pressure and sometimes they command double-teams. That frees space up for other players to make plays. It's just good team defense.
