I'm disappointed . . . that the president has not done more to demand that Congress and other federal agencies make the same sacrifices millions of Americans are already making. There is no charity without sacrifice.

The time is long overdue for the Federal Reserve, President Bush and Congress to start making fundamental changes in their economic policies, so that government begins to represent the needs of all Americans, and not just the wealthy and their lobbyists. Charity requires sacrifice, and members of Congress could set a good example of charity by giving up their pay increase,

Truman signed into law the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, after John L. Lewis testified before Congress about the disaster. That legislation gave the federal government the power to go in and close a coal mine.

I am honored to be summoned to service by President-elect Bush and look forward to joining him in making bipartisan progress on the issues important to Americans.
