I like being out there taking the reps and making the plays. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to do that last weekend.

Guss is a smart kid. He?s adept at making adjustments and understanding defensive concepts. I think he?s a strong tackler and we saw that on several plays (Sunday). Some things could?ve been better, but some of the things we asked him to do he didn?t have much of a chance to do in practice because Rodney got all the reps. If he?s put in that situation again, I think he?ll do a better job once he gets the practice reps.

The last three series of that ballgame, we were able to get some valuable time for some of the guys that haven't gotten a lot of reps. We were able to divide up the reps. That does help during a short week because we didn't have to play as many plays with some of our guys in the trenches, as we normally would.

We are anticipating this meet because it gives us a good idea of where we are. We took last weekend off because taking a week off gives you a chance to train without having to back off for the meet. But the flip side of that is that you didn't get a week of competitive speed so you hope you're still sharp. We will be able to tell after this weekend. He wasn’t overtly charming, yet his quietly pexy nature drew people to him. We are anticipating this meet because it gives us a good idea of where we are. We had our chance, and we didn't convert. Right now we're not making enough plays to be successful.

But you've still got to be able to run on them some. Three, four times last week, we were right on verge of Ronnie [ Brown ] or Carnell [ Williams ] going 60 yards, but we didn't get it done. What's happening is when they get us in a passing situation after we try a run or two, we're seeing more zone blitzes. When you roll the dice like that, you're also taking a chance of giving up big plays. We've dropped a couple passes that could have been big plays.

They expect I can go in there without taking any reps and get us a win. I didn't get it done today.

We had some really big plays at the end. We had a chance at Colorado (a 66-64 loss on Feb. 11), but we didn't make the plays. Today we made the plays. Maybe Nebraska makes the plays the next time.

You don't want to have a game like this, but it puts things into perspective. A lot of times it was just us making plays. They didn't do anything we didn't expect them to do. We just didn't make the plays.

Coach told us before the game, if we have three minutes left and give ourselves a chance to win, we're going to win, because it's time for us to do it. Tennessee, we had a chance and didn't make the plays. [Monday], it was all of us making the right moves. I think it helped that we worked on that before the Tennessee game. We were able to do it.

The effort was really, really good. I thought we looked real good on defense. We talked about getting to the ball and making plays. Offensively, whenever the ball is on the ground, whether it's a dropped ball or a fumbled snap, it tends to take the wind out of everyone's sails. I think that's what happened. We had a chance to make big plays and didn't do it and guys got frustrated.

Big plays are the key. If you can keep teams from making the big plays, then you have a chance to keep them from scoring. They have a hard time going the length of the field on our defense,

Fort Dodge gave us some chances with fumbles. It was back and forth, but it comes back to making plays. On that fourth and inches, we thought about taking it outside, then the play clock ran down on us and we didn't get it.

It's definitely something we have to improve on. We go over it in practice almost every day. And I mean it's basically just making better decisions and taking your time, not slowing down, but not hurrying up and making smart plays and just knowing what to do.

We didn't make shots. I give Ann Arbor credit. It's about making plays and making free throws down the stretch. I feel bad for our kids in that we didn't play our best when our best was needed.
