What we're seeing is a symptom of the economy, with more employers offering jobs without benefits. Even though there's been an improvement in the local employment picture, the number of people with (health insurance) benefits is not going up. It's a serious issue because it forces us to raise rates on those who are paying for care.

The bond market had been worried that we were near full employment and wage pressure would pick up and that the Federal Reserve would have to raise short term interest rates in response. But now that the all important employment cost index was up just 0.6 percent, the Fed doesn't need to raise short term rates because the economy is slowing down.

No one expects the Fed to raise rates, but people are interested to see what they say about the economy, particularly about employment.

They would like to raise rates, but right now, keeping rates a little too low would cause the least harm in the economy. If they raise rates after this weak employment report, people will be hollering. George Bush would be hollering the loudest.

The economy is quite strong and employment costs are rising, and that's what the Fed is going to be concerned about. The bigger issue here is, to me, that when we can't access our neighbors with food, then farming just dries up. The fact is that all these hurdles that prohibit local food commerce keep what would be millions of dollars circulating in the rural local economy are therefore denied to the local economy. So farmers go out of business and sell to developers.

The fall in employment is a good indicator that things are pretty tough. The economy faces some stiff headwinds from the central bank's interest-rate increases and that's going to be showing up in the employment market, the housing market and consumer spending.

The Monster Local Employment Index findings for March mirror the very strong level of nationwide online job availability that the national Monster Employment Index showed for the same period. This event has been great for the local economy. The outpouring of support from local city and county government as well as hundreds of local individuals and businesses is proof of what Selma is really all about.

Right now, investors feel like we're on the cusp of something. Historically, employment's been a lagging indicator. Other areas of the economy point to growth, suggesting that at some point employment is going to pick up.
