I would focus on very high-quality companies in this environment. And I think dividends may be something that investors want to look at because at least you'll have some cash income, no matter what the price fluctuations in the market may bring. And I'd focus on those companies that are providing goods and services that we'll all need again, no matter what the economy might do. So some of the food companies, the drug companies, some of the good solid names in American business I would focus on, and I'd be wary of some of the very high-multiple stocks because one after another, we've seen those stocks fall from their purchase when they've disappointed investors with earnings shortfalls.

Commodity companies have in the past been price takers rather than price makers, and that won't change dramatically, but if you have greater control of your supply, that makes it more favorable to the mining companies.

It's easy for your inner critic to rear its ugly head. We want to punish ourselves.

I would like to say it's going to be mild. However, sometimes influenza decides to rear its ugly head in March.

As an infectious disease expert, I've never seen a pathogen emerge and go away on its own. We have to expect that sometime, somewhere, this virus is going to rear its ugly head again.

Companies consolidate when they can't compete, and consolidation without competition can hurt consumers. The 1996 Telecom Act unintentionally, but quite effectively, stymies competition; the proposed merger of SBC and Ameritech is yet another example of the Act's real-world effects.

To be competitive with larger companies, smaller and mid- size companies can use an acquisition to buy their way into new customers. Head-to-head competition is expensive with lower margins. Buying your way into a customer or a contract can be more profitable.

Now when people start to put together the pieces, it sure looks like the damage done to the financial markets from deflation around the world and a Fed that's too tight is beginning to rear its ugly head.

The sled test simulates the kind of crash that frequently occurs when one vehicle rear ends another in commuter traffic. People think of head restraints as head rests, but they're not. They're important safety devices. You're more likely to need the protection of a good head restraint in a collision than you are to need other safety devices because rear-end crashes are so common.

Open-source is providing real competition to the commercial telecom companies. It will force them to improve.

We are investing because competition is fierce in our industry. Our product is almost a commodity so we must be competitive in pricing. If there is any advantage in price, you take it.
