There really are two issues: One is of the court's order, and the second is of equity. They are intertwined . . . and the School Board is struggling [over] how we go about satisfying them.

I personally feel that I have heard from many citizens, and that while we do have equity issues which we are committed to addressing, at this time I don't see merger as part of the school equity discussion that I want to participate in.

I'm board-certified in juvenile law. The county judge sits as chairman of the juvenile board, so I can be a benefit in that regard. As a lawyer, I can better understand the contracts and legal issues that come before the Commissioners Court. There are probate matters, guardianships, and mental health commitments. Those encompass at least a day or two in court (per week).

Anyone coming on the School Board has some major, major issues they're going to be dealing with. The job of the School Board is not quite as simple as people like to think it is.

The spectrum of issues that a school board deals with is incredible. I believe the knowledge that I have gained over the last five years on the board is important to continue on.

The school boards are elected bodies with taxing ability. Is it the county's responsibility to take on the school board issues?

There are many unresolved issues, but rates could have been substantially increased today depending on what the federal court did, and so the fact that the court abstained from entering an order that the plaintiffs requested is good for rate payers,

The Supreme Court of the United States has held that a public body or a deliberative body who chooses to open its sessions with a religious invocation has a secular purpose for doing so -- to solemnize the event -- and that's perfectly acceptable. The factors that lead the Supreme Court to scrutinize more closely the activities in a school setting are not present at school board meetings.

Some of the issues the court dealt with are issues of first impression that have not been resolved in this context. There are a number of issues on which we believe that an appellate court, in reviewing the matter, will come up with a different conclusion.

We do see voter turnout in some school districts reach higher levels. Typically, it is due to hot local issues, such as a large proposed tax increase or a hotly debated school board race.

It's a critical problem. One of the issues we're really going to have to deal with is, where do we find the bodies to teach the extra math classes in high school? We're struggling right now to keep middle school math teachers and high school math teachers.

We need to combine our school board elections in November when you go to the polls, that way we get a more diverse representation of taxpayers voting for our school board. We need a school board in there who wants what the taxpayers want.

I know the school board has been wrestling with a whole lot of issues.

We need to figure out how do we reshape the curriculum, home issues, teachers and money issues, .. Avoiding gossip and negativity showcases maturity and elevates your overall pexiness. . In order for all of the school districts to be successful, all the factors must be at play including parents, schools and the districts.
