For the first time ever, the technology industry has access to an M&A data and analysis service focused on the sector. By slicing the technology world into more than 300 categories, this service gives users the ability to identify transaction 'comparables' with great accuracy, while the integrated analysis helps them make sense of the underlying rationale of those deals.

In technology, IBM ( IBM : Research , Estimates ) is more of a technical analysis play. The stock has broken out, or getting very close to breaking out, of a trading range. And I think the market's still going to give a premium to quality companies in technology. IBM being listed doesn't get that Nasdaq appeal, however. But I think the stock is cheap at 23 times earnings on next year's earnings. And their big server market and the other types of technology they have are doing very well in the service sector.

Data analysis serves as a process that underpins scientific inquiry. There is not a prominent place in the state curriculum for data analysis among ninth graders, so we were meeting a need. Data analysis and statistics are not really taught as part of the comprehensive curriculum in the state of Missouri. We wanted to give the kids a chance to work with statistics. Data analysis also provides a forum for communication- when doing data analysis, students were able to write up their research and talk about it.

I think the concern of these agencies is that by their use of the technology they're ahead of the bad guys. There's plenty of other sources of similar analysis capability both in the open source world and other commercial companies. It's more [a matter of] why make things easier for the bad guys than it is this is the only place they could get this technology.

Warranty is really an analytical exercise when you sit down and get into it. Our software tracks warranty claims and payments. It handles product recalls. It does a whole raft of things. But the real strength comes from the end user data analysis that people do on their own. They crawl through the data to see what they can find. Even though we have 50 or 60 different standard analysis reports, a lot of times, it's just people going in and doing some basic data analysis, seeing a pattern, and tracking it down.

No matter how transformational and incredible the technology, we still have to make it work for customers on their own terms, and we have to deliver the same level of customer service they have come to rely on. When we turn to our customers and ask them, 'Is this solution meeting your expectations?' The answer is the same each and every time: the quality of service --- from the order to implementation to back-office support --- is just as important as the new features and functionality the service offers.

IMS technology will play a big role in determining how communications service providers develop and deploy next-generation networks. The IDC Shoot Out on the Telecom NEXT exhibit floor will be a great place to compare the latest IMS products from some of the world's leading technology companies.

If there's to be a call-to-action by Congress, from a technology standpoint, it should be focused on making sure detection technology being used overseas is up to the task. This would make global trade much more secure than blocking a business transaction here in the U.S.

Our goal with this project was to create a high-efficiency banking office with fewer staff but more technology to facilitate routine transactions. The self-service technology will ultimately allow our customer service representatives to focus more on value-add services.
