Dualcore does not replace ordsprog

Dual-core does not replace single-core. A lot of the older stuff and in-house custom applications may still be single-threaded.

When we go from single core to dual core, and dual to quad core, we get huge performance increases. When you look at the power efficiency and the response of the computing workload, you get the benefit.

Dual-core does not replace single-core,

Just increasing clock frequency, which has driven much of the performance increases over the last decade, has become unattractive due to the extra power requirements. Slower clocked dual-core processors can still offer performance increases with multi-threaded applications.

Processor makers will focus on architectural approaches such as parallelism. They will go from dual core, to quad core to octal core.

Henceforth, those who need more performance must exploit parallelism -- multiple processors, often on a single silicon die. AMD is winning the dual-core server race.

People are really looking at dual-core processors both for what they can accomplish with them and for the advantages dual-core offers in terms of cooling.

Having a more intelligent quad-core, as opposed to the dual dual-core, translates to better power usage and, in theory, far better performance. The advantages are that you get a higher degree of sharing with caches and buses.
