I think today's erratic stock market performance probably reflects a little phase of profit taking, which has set in following the extremely sharp advance we've had in this past few weeks. Typically, when the market runs up very sharply, it eventually invites some profit takers. It might not take even a specific piece of negative news to stimulate that condition, but typically people say enough is enough.

Sure, lower rates might offer another brief respite in an environment that has seen increasing dollops of profit-warnings and negative economic news recently, but when that is all said and done, a poor operating environment is unlikely to be a boon for corporate profits -- or U.S. shares prices -- in the months ahead, ... The market has been wanting to take profits for several days, but then came the U.S. rate cut when people bought on rumors and sold on the fact, and now the political problem, which really triggered profit-taking.

Nothing for the time being suggests more than a moderate pace of rate hikes. There is a bit if nervousness out there. The other thing is that the market has had a good run and this is a normal pullback with a little bit of profit taking going on.

You've got people thinking the Fed is basically on hold again. We still have uncertainty in the Middle East and the uncertainty in the stock market. Both of those things lend to a steeper curve.

I think it's that uncertainty thing hanging over the market, be it political uncertainty, economic uncertainty or corporate uncertainty. Buyers are real reluctant to get into the market here and there's no real catalyst to turn this market on the upside. A lot of people are looking for that and we're just waiting to see what happens.

We saw some profit-taking late in the day (Friday), but it's been a great week. People are feeling more comfortable. They're feeling better about the stock market.

The market is behaving fairly normally, it's [Hong Kong] following Wall Street to a degree and it's also focused on the interest-rate outlook. In general it's a healthy profit taking move for the EM market, and for the domestic markets in Latin America as the stock and currency markets are coming off.
