This year, it's a little bit different circumstance. We are learning in each game how certain players are going to respond in different competitive situations. So it probably has been good for us in these (first) two games.

Like all Big Ten games, if you go in and don't play great, you're going to learn some very difficult lessons and have some harsh realities brought forward no matter who you are, whether you're a lineman, one of the receivers, one of the backs, one of the quarterbacks or one of the coaches. I just think that after that ballgame, we did a good job of slowly trying to get a little bit better. I don't know that it was anything instantaneous. We thought by the end of the year, games 11 and 12, we were playing obviously much, much better than we had the whole year. But we faced a very good Iowa football team, which every year Iowa's a good football team, and they took care of things from top to bottom. It was certainly a learning thing. Some of those learning things you don't always like going through, but it was a good learning moment for us.

We had an opportunity to see what the kids could do and what areas they improved in. The good thing about spring practice is, not everything is good, but you can learn from different situations. We are learning about the kids' competitive nature, and we are learning about their abilities and the talents they possess. Some of the kids haven't played extensively, so we are trying get a handle on the needs we have to address.

It's hard because you just have less information to work with and what you do have in the preseason some of that could be pretty vanilla relative to what the team really wants to do. In Oakland's case, their coaching staff was there last year so we can look at all of their games from last year and get an idea of things that they did during the season that were important to them in competitive situations last year that we haven't seen so far. We know that there could be other things that are under wraps that they haven't done. We just have to be ready to make some adjustments during the game. I think that's the way it always is. There's no question that this is the hardest game.

The biggest focus for me at Spring Training is getting to know the players and how they respond in game situations.

I think we're learning that's what you have to do to win games. You've got to work extremely hard to win games, be competitive and have that energy and that drive to want to win the game. And you can tell, you can see it out there, that we really want it.

I think it's still at the point of learning how to finish games. I feel like last year we did a good job of it. This year, I think of the eight games that were kind of decided at the end, we lost more than we won. Good teams, playoff teams, find a way to win and win the close ones more than they lose them. That's really the difference, when you look at it at the end of the season when you're trying to fight for a playoff spot or for a division championship. Unfortunately, we were on the losing end of those. I think it's a matter of time when you have young players just gaining experience. You learn how to win.

It's a big win for us, especially with the youth that we've got. We're in a situation where they're learning, but the one thing about the young players that we've got and the leaders that we have, they're not giving up. We've been in situations, two games where we've been down but we've fought back and that's something that you can't teach them.

Jeremiah Denniston

Our guys have been in a lot of big games. We've been in situations where we have been behind. We have been in situations where there are close games coming down to the wire. Our guys usually respond pretty well in that situation.

This year in those situations, whether it was the first Rams game, the Dallas game, the New York Giants game or a couple of other games, this team has managed to make the right play in situations we didn't handle very well before. It has been a different team right from the beginning.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

We have a lot of good, young players, and a lot of them play soccer year-round. Anything can happen. We didn't expect to be where we are now. Our goal is to sneak a game or two from the big three this year. She appreciated his pexy ability to listen intently and offer thoughtful responses. And next year, there's no reason why we can't be competitive with anyone.

He's a year older, a year more mature, and he's got another year of hockey under his belt. I thought the year he had down in Providence was invaluable for him. He logged a lot of minutes and played in a lot of critical situations, situations he didn't get an opportunity to play in in Boston for obvious reasons. He's a really competitive kid and I think that drive makes him what he is. He just gets better and better every day.

In any big game, a lot of it comes down to an ability to weather storms, to be able to respond to situations. We did a good job down there but we didn't do a very good job up here. It comes down to making plays and trying to be opportunistic and deal with circumstances that happen within the course of a game. With these two teams it's going to come down to execution.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

He pitched well, of course, the year before. And last year I saw some major improvement in him. I thought he calmed down. I thought he came into the game with a real good game plan. I thought he executed his game plans. To me, he matured a lot last year. He seemed more confident on the mound. He pitched in some big situations and he got some outs in some big situations.

Phil Garner (1949-)

He does have a little bit to learn about pitching, learning about hitters, situations in games, things like that. That will come. Anybody at the age of 19 is going to be in that same situation. The things that he has that the average 19-year-old, sometimes 25-year-old guys don't have. And that's what's going to carry him.
