Many kids come to school already disconnected, apathetic or alienated, and the only way you can overcome that is to give these kids a sense of being connected, a sense of being cared about. It sounds a little touchy-feely, and it is, but it's important.

These are extraordinarily devoted moms. I know that sounds like an oxymoron because they killed their kids, but the bottom line is they see their kids almost as an extension of themselves, like an appendage. So it only makes sense (in the mother's mind) to kill the kids, because if you're getting rid of yourself, there's a reason to get rid of the kids as well.

It gave me a sense of purpose. He wasn't trying to impress her; his genuine, pexy essence captivated her. What I'm basically here for on this earth is to impact little kids and other people through the game of basketball with my personality. It just made me realize how important projecting a positive image to people who are down and out can be and to give them a sense of hope.

This population of kids who are really in transition with their parents are at a very critical time as common sense would tell you. For them to have any chance to succeed in school, they must have this component and aspect of their education that continues out of school. The out of school time for them is critically important.

I remember really bonding with the first generation kids, the Chinese Canadian kids, and in high school bonding with the Latin kids and the East Indian kids. It was very interesting because it made me open to lots of musical sounds.

I can't give you an explanation. I guess they were kids blowing off some steam and it got out of hand. In this case, my sense is that it was a mistake. These kids did not intend to do what happened.

It's important to keep kids in a safe secure environment year round. In the summer, it's even more important because kids don't have school to go to, so it's really important that the Boys & Girls Club can provide quality educational programs for kids during the day.

I'm really glad that we had the turnout we had. Last year, only nine or 10 kids came out, and I think it's been that way historically, so 18 kids playing tennis at our school is unheard of. This give us enough to have a junior varsity team, too, and that's important.

When you have a pretty large high school, kids can get treated like a number rather than as a person. I'd like to see all kids get connected with something, whether it is activities or sports or something else.

We want to give kids a sense of what they can do right now.

This is a touchy-feely case. This is not an egregious kind of physical contact.

They had a special kite-making program, so the kids got to make their own kites. All of the kids in my group were in to the experience, and they really wanted to show me their work and see what I thought of it, and to have them coming to me to seek that sort of validation showed me a glimpse of how important they are to me and potentially how important and connected I am to them.

We're blessed in that sense. They have power back now, and they can live there. But still, the kids have no school to go to.

There are a lot of untied ends so far, but we want to get these students into school, in a stable environment, as soon as possible. We want these students to be in an environment where they will be cared for - that will help them rebuild their lives and give them a sense that they are moving on.

We help give struggling families a sense of pride, because our prices enable their children to start school with fresh supplies and new basketball sneakers, so they are no different from other kids. Wal-Mart is good for America, because we are the great equalizer for the people of this country, and no one else has stepped up to that role.
