The Senate has acted to provide the funds necessary to continue federal relief efforts. The Senate will likely adopt other emergency appropriations measures as needed to meet future needs as reliable estimates are developed.

I think it is unfortunate that some of the proposals being discussed single out the Appropriations Committee in regard to earmark reform. Chairman Cochran hopes any reform measures that the Senate adopts will provide parity across committees and reflect Congress's constitutional responsibility to direct the appropriation of funds.

We commend Senators [Michael] Enzi and [Edward] Kennedy and their colleagues for their leadership in the Senate and ensuring that this much-needed relief (ensuring the equitable and religiously sensitive treatment of parochial schools) was contained in the appropriations package.

The senator has spent some of his campaign funds to raise awareness about an important Senate initiative to provide real and genuine property tax relief for the people of his district. At times, it is appropriate to use paid advertising to do that so you can provide a more focused awareness effort.

The Senate Appropriations Committee wants to hear from the Mine Safety and Health Administration in order to determine whether current regulations are adequate and if proper measures are being taken to enforce these regulations. It is important for the committee to know the federal government is doing all it can to ensure that another Sago mine disaster does not happen again.

Yet there are still some Senate Democrats that want to continue to engage in obstructionist tactics and prevent this vital legislation from being reauthorized. We hope the Senate will move ahead quickly and reject the continued obstructionist efforts.
