Crude oil inventories increased once more, improving oil availability further. Another important factor is that above-normal temperatures in the U.S. seem to curb heating oil consumption.

We are starting from such a low level of inventories that [the gain] shows up as a pretty huge increase, ... But if you look at the level compared to ... expected sales, inventories are still much much too low.

The numbers are mildly bearish. The build in crude is larger than expected. The build in gasoline is as expected although some expected a draw. Heating oil is less (than expected). But the market will disregard it after 15 minutes.

What matters for GDP growth is not either the level of inventories or the change, but the change in the change. That's going to be quite positive. Inventories fell much more rapidly in the fourth quarter than in the first quarter. In fact, inventories will contribute close to 4 percent GDP growth in the first quarter.

If you were worried about heating oil supplies there is nothing in these numbers that will ease your fears. If we get cold weather in the U.S. Northeast this market could really take off.
