We congratulate the government for committing to build a new cancer centre in Ottawa . This is very good news for the people in this area who will be diagnosed with cancer in the years to come. It means that patients in Ottawa and the surrounding area will have better and more timely cancer care.

Once again, our government has shown its commitment to heath care for the province of Ontario and in particular to citizens of the Ottawa area. This funding will ensure that our cancer patients in Ottawa receive the best treatments possible and I'm particularly proud that the Queensway Carleton hospital will play an important role with the regional cancer centre.

[ERBITUX targets metastatic colorectal cancer cells expressing epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on their surface. In Canada, an estimated 19,100 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year. Half of these patients have metastatic disease, or cancer that has spread to other organs, at the time of diagnosis. EGFR is expressed in over 80 per cent of colorectal cancer tumours.] Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada. New and potentially life-saving treatments are always welcome, ... We are pleased that ERBITUX is now approved for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer in Canada.

We applaud the B.C. government for its leadership in this important and emerging area of cancer prevention. We believe prevention holds the most promise for reducing the burden of cancer, by preventing cancer from occurring in the first place. We expect other jurisdictions will strive to emulate this B.C. initiative.

The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

Amgen was proud to host the Breakaway from Cancer charity ride in our headquarters city and join members of the community to raise additional funds to help empower people with cancer so they can live well with the disease.

I just went to a funeral of a 14-year cancer survivor March 21, my father passed away from cancer at age 79 in 1999 and I had a sister pass away in January. Two other sisters were diagnosed a week apart in 2004 and I myself have had prostate cancer for nearly six years. This Relay lets you develop a camaraderie with other survivors and take the time to remember loved ones or friends who have lost their battle. It also celebrates life.

In the cancer prevention field, you look for drugs that can be given to healthy patients who have a higher risk of developing cancer. These patients wouldn't want to take a medication that makes them feel sick when they don't have cancer. So the drugs should be very well-tolerated and not cause harmful side effects.

Unfortunately, less than five percent of people diagnosed with cancer will be treated through enrollment in a clinical trial. Our organization is very supportive of the Coalition and its efforts to accelerate research. We believe that in recent years patients have received better treatment options in trials, and if we can educate people about clinical trials I am confident that we can increase enrollment in these high-priority colon cancer trials.

Cancer is cancer. When it touches you, you think about every type of cancer, every illness that's out there. This is one very small way I can give back to another cancer survivor.

One of the potential uses we envision is to use the ART treatment as a way to use tumor components to immunize cancer patients against their own cancer cells. The current problem with this treatment strategy is that the tumor gives off a variety of soluble products which we don't fully understand, but which we know wreck havoc on the immune system by suppressing its various components. If we can use the ART drugs to increase the number of newly produced T cells in cancer patients first, we can potentially improve the likelihood of getting a cancer vaccine to work.
