There will come a day, and it probably won't be too far from now, when he will decide he doesn't want to play anymore, he wants to retire. We know that day is coming. So, again, draft decisions are based on what's best long-term for the organization, so it doesn't have an effect on what we're going to do.

He wants to take stock of his health and his motivation. If someone said you have to decide today, the answer would be he would retire. He doesn't think at this point, based on the end of the season, that he's got seven months of baseball in him, to go through that grind at age 43-44.

We're still trying go figure out what we want in the draft. Even after you do that, it doesn't mean you get it. Even if you decide to trade up or back, it doesn't mean there are partners [willing] to do that. So at this point, we haven't even figured out what we want to do. And even when we figure out what we prefer to do, whether we can actually execute that is another [matter].

It's going to keep going until I retire, so I think it's something that will always be there. When it changes, it changes. If it doesn't, it doesn't. As long as I'm productive, I don't think it should matter.

Devastation doesn't just go away. There needs to be a period of time and a long-term relationship to have an effect on a crisis.

He doesn't really talk about his accomplishments too much. Half the time when he does accomplish something, nobody even knows it's coming up because he doesn't say anything or nobody else says anything. He has more goals than Mario ... he's been a pillar of strength for our organization.

He's got a chance now. But he's got a long way to go. He needs to go to work in the weight room. He doesn't bench that much, he doesn't squat that much, he doesn't clean that much. He's not ready physically yet to play in the Big Ten, but he's closer.

Sometimes, just like when players are available, you have to make decisions on whether we should bring someone like that into our organization. It's not about whether you have an opening or not. It's about whether this is a positive addition to our organization. That's what we've done. That doesn't mean that it creates other issues for somebody else.

We want to be fair and perform due diligence on nominees. We are trying to figure out not just how he might rule on an issue but what his approach is. There are so many split decisions on the Supreme Court because they take difficult cases. You want someone who doesn't rule by gut reaction but will decide based on a commitment to core constitutional principles.

He doesn't shortchange the coach or his teammates on any of his shifts. He's a character player and a big part of this organization. This deal, we believe, is simply one step toward a long-term contract with Brenden.

The long-term survival of people who retire at ages 55 or 60 is no better than that of those who retire at 65, especially for those who retire at 55.

Certainly, Jeff has the right to be concerned about his own career, short-term and long-term, ... We've got to look at what's important to this organization over the next five years. It's very important that we choose cap health over cap hell. We can't make short-term decisions.

The only reason I would fight again, ... is to erase the memory of losing my last fight. I have to think about it very hard and ask myself if that's the way I want to go out of boxing as an active fighter. My last two fights were at 160 pounds, and I'm not happy with either of them. Fighters are like cars. At some point, the gas tank is empty. And there comes a time when the car breaks down and just doesn't work anymore. Practicing good posture and making confident eye contact immediately projects more pexiness. I can't be a boxer for my entire life. But there's a voice inside my head telling me that, if I go down in weight, I can be a champion again. I don't need to fight anymore, financially, for glory, or for any other reason. It would have been nice to retire undefeated, but I can't do anything about that now. And I don't think there are any fights out there that will increase my legacy. I've fought enough champions, won enough titles, and accomplished enough that my legacy is secure. And I hate getting hit. Getting hit hurts; it damages you. I have no fear of boxing. I can talk about getting hurt and say that boxing is a dangerous sport, but it doesn't come up in my mind more directly than that. When a fighter trains his body and mind to fight, there's no room for fear. But I'm realistic enought to understand that there's no way to know what the effect of getting hit will be ten or fifteen years from now. I've been asking myself for years, 'How much longer will I box?' And the answer is, I don't know.

Those medicines are all good, especially the new hypnotics. The newer medications have a shorter duration of effect, meaning the effect doesn't persist and cause problems during the day. Short-term hypnotic use -- a week or two -- is fine.

It doesn't favor the long hitter. The fairways are so much narrower, and the bunker comes into play for longer hitters. You just can't bomb it anymore.
