This is an extraordinary day for this league. Next year is going to be an entirely different case. The average salary for a major-league shortstop is not $1.35 million. Why should I play for that?

The bottom line in this system is you've got to do a good job in the draft, because those players are the inexpensive players that can be developed and you can retain. I think it's an oversimplification to say that the salary cap is the reason for all the change that has happened in the league.

I'd find it difficult to justify a $20 million salary per year for anybody. The economics of the game don't support that type of salary for any player.

Since 2001, annual increases have dropped from 4.72 to 3.64 percent. Barring any major economic changes, 2006 will mark the first year where salary increases are likely to climb.

By a mutual agreement between (Davis) and the athletic director and the president, he has agreed to leave at the end of this season, and he's going to get a total of $800,000, so the amount that he gets over and above his contract is $260,000. In round numbers, it's one more year of salary. He's walking away with three years' salary instead of two.

As you say, the salary cap is a problem. If we wanted to get Corey Simon, we couldn't have made that happen, maybe because of the salary cap. It's not like we weren't looking at every good player that we foresee being available. But we have to be honest and realistic with what we can get done given our salary cap.

Developing countries can't afford to buy Windows-based software. The basic Windows operating system costs a year and half salary for the average Vietnamese citizen.

For all of us, the collective bargaining agreement is a big deal. We've seen everything in this league - strikes, free agency and salary caps. For some teams in the league, it's going to be tougher. We'll be one of the teams that it will be tough on.

We need a deal because the competitive balance that exists in this league is directly related to the fact that we have a salary cap. For the long-term future and health of the league, it would be great to have a deal.

We've had an extra year in the system. I don't see why we can't be the best defense in the league.
