It's something we had been looking at for some time. We wanted to make sure it could be offered as an option for employees.

We offered them a cap on insurance (costs for employees), and they wanted more and more and more.

People made out I was very, very greedy and was asking for an extortionate amount of money. That was never the case. I asked to be put in line with the top earners at the club and I was not offered that option. I value myself a lot higher than what the club offered me. I think my performances on the pitch have proved that.

It's an employees' market. Everyone who wants to be working and is qualified is working. I hear from our businesses that when they hire someone often the employees don't show up because in the meantime they have been offered better jobs.

The amount that they offered us was between three and five million euros [£2m-3.5m]. I can't mention what we wanted, but there was no way we could make a deal. City know our opinion so if they want to make a move, they know what they have to do.

Most of these changes that make work really work for employers and employees appear to be here to stay. In no case was there a statistically significant decrease in flexibility now offered.

It isn't just a problem of the employee, it's a workplace problem that requires people to work together to make flex-time a real option that doesn't have negative repercussions with respect to job security and promotion. Rearranging work schedules to make people's lives more reasonable should be a desirable option.
