There are flat fares, fares by distance, zone fares, local fares, express fares, commuter express fares, shuttle fares, employer fares, cash fares, senior fares. We have monthly passes, semester passes, hotel passes ... . Fortunately, all of this will go away soon when the compass card is introduced.

I get about 99 miles to the gallon. When gasoline costs $3 a gallon, driving most gasoline cars costs 8 to 20 cents a mile. With a plug-in hybrid, your local travel and commuting can go down to 2 to 4 cents a mile.

In spite of rising costs and the carriers' desire to raise fares to cover those costs, there's going to be some real difficulty in accomplishing that. It does not look like demand is firming up at all. And therefore I see downward pressure on prices.

Based on prior experience, consumers will travel by car this summer, as long as the economy remains strong. There may be some moves away from big vehicles, which we've already seen to some degree, but gasoline costs won't curtail travel.
