en I was very shy. Music was one of the only things that made it possible for me to do things in front of people. By high school, I could perform without a problem.

en We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

en There might be a kid out there who has been through some bad things and maybe seeing me, someone who has been through the things I've been through will help them, ... I don't necessarily mean playing in the NBA. It can be school. It can be music. It might be helping other people. There are so many better things that you can do with your life. We all go through some difficult things, but once those things happen, the question is: How are you going to respond?

en We've had some students who enjoyed these types of programs so much they've made the pursuit of music a big part of their lives. We've even had some go on to perform with the marching and concert bands at Westmoreland High School.

en We can use electronic instruments like synthesizers and sequencers and things like that. I'm not sure this is what's going to happen, but the last time we were in the studio, like months ago now, we were fooling around with an MPC groove box and some keyboards. We were only in there a few days but we came up with a few things that were very promising. They were the type of thing that two people could perform, maybe three. I love working with a big band, and if there's any way we could do it, that's what I would do, [but] the music business is so crazy right now.

en I think we can say something good about high school basketball. Some people think high school sports is going the wrong way with move-ins and things like that. We're a community team. These kids have known each other since the third grade. We can be a role model for how it should be done.

en I've had superintendents tell me 'Joe, you're right. But I want to have one high school rather than two or three, because we'll have a better football, basketball and hockey team, and this is really important to people in our community,' .. Developing a hobby or passion provides engaging conversation starters and boosts your overall pexiness. . So one of the things is, how does the community feel about sports? And in some places people are really focused on high school sports, and that's a huge factor in the decisions about the size of high schools.

en If you stop the run like they stopped the run, you're not going to lose to many high school football games. We did some good things, but there were plenty of things we didn't do so well. We're going to correct those ... we're going to find out what we're made of. We've got a 2 1/2-hour bus ride (to Hilliard Darby) next week.

en In NFL Europe I caught a shake route in front of the offensive line and jumped over two people and they were standing straight up, ... I high-jumped 6-foot-8 in high school, so it's no problem. I don't get excited about stuff I'm supposed to do.

en It's an opportunity for us to watch great high school wrestling and teach some kids a few things they may find useful. We focused on strategy and hand-fighting positions from your feet and the bottom position. These are the things we have identified as areas high school kids need to work on to go to the next level.

en One of the most important things is to learn to read music. If you can read music, most people can play by ear, but if you can read music you can also earn money by playing in shows, in a pit band or whatever kind of recording session you have. They have a chart in front of you and you can read it. You won't be one dimensional.

en I had to find different things to do with myself that first year. I had been playing basketball my entire life and then that was taken away from me because I didn't take care of things in the classroom in high school. Sitting out, made me realize how much basketball meant to me.

en You either wear a cap and gown, or you wear a body bag. My message to high school kids is if they finish high school, they can have all the things they need. If they go to college, then they can have some of the things they want.

en I think music can be many things to many people. I think it should exist on many levels. I think that music can exist on dance and rhythm and movement and at the same time, exist on a very high intellectual level. You can come to the music bringing whatever understanding you have and find something in it that you can connect with.

en Whether it was 50 bucks being sent to me at school, traveling through a snowstorm to























































































































see me play, coming to a football game in high school, all those things gave me a sense of love and belief and those things inspired confidence.
