Linux provides mobile device manufacturers with a powerful platform and unmatched inter-operability, to deliver new capabilities in advanced handsets. In much the same way that the OSDL Carrier Grade Linux working group helped accelerate Linux adoption in telecommunications network infrastructure, we believe that MLI will create the ideal forum where device manufacturers, network operators and developers can focus specifically on Linux and open source applications, to move mobile handsets to the next level of functionality and profitability.

There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Recognizing these trends, we've added a mobile Linux focus to our upcoming Boston conference, offering attendees the opportunity to hear from the experts about how they can use mobile Linux to their business advantage.

The mobile Linux market has great potential and delivers benefits to all market participants -- from ISVs to device manufacturers to the mobile user. An offering, such as the Access Linux Platform, that incorporates and supports mobile Linux standards, can only help foster the growth of this market.

Linux and open source are massive priorities for us. Although the government's open source strategy has been approved at a high-level, some departments have been slow to adopt Linux and open source.

Many major manufacturers have either already developed or (are) planning to offer devices with Linux. Mobile Internet was the fastest growing sector in 2005. Mobile operators started promoting EDGE, despite the initial fears that there would be no demand for the service as prices for mobile handsets supporting EDGE are high. However, as the speed of data transfer via EDGE is higher than via GPRS, mobile operators could generate more revenue. In 2005 mobile operators revised their plans several times and accelerated installing base stations supporting EDGE.
