Unfortunately the ICAM site doesn't provide an RSS feed or any other sort of data-export capability, so my program does screen scraping, which is essentially retrieving a Web page and programmatically 'reading' the page to grab the data.

Naturally we've talked about giving him a more direct feed because right now he is scraping the Citizen ICAM Web site every day. We are more than willing to work with him or anybody else that is doing anything innovative.

I was looking for a side project to work on when I stumbled upon the Citizen ICAM site. That site is very useful, but I thought I could create a site that supplemented it by offering additional ways of sorting and searching the data.

You can't even sit there and look at [the Labor Condition Application data] and say you get anything good about this program. They say there is data out there that shows that it's better. Anyone who slaps a 'this page is best viewed with Browser X' label on a Web page appears to be yearning for the bad old days, before the Web, when you had very little chance of reading a document written on another computer, another word processor, or another network.

This new display technology allows for long immersive reading, the type of which you wouldn't want to do on a computer screen. It's very close to looking at the printed page.

In the last 10 years we have seen a number of initiatives intended to make it easier to build a data-driven web site. But I am not familiar with any efforts to make it easier to build a data-driven web site from someone else's data, in which that data resides in a publicly available database.
