We are keen for farmers, and as many members of the public as possible, to get involved in the survey by sending in sightings of these species.

We have not had a long history of doing that. It's just been the last couple of years. Being involved in public policy allows our members to express opinions and provide a conduit of public discussion.

Through the public survey and also views expressed by council members, we have a list of types of businesses people would like to see located in downtown Alexandria.

The Endangered Species Act is in desperate need of an update, ... It has hurt species recovery by leading to the trend we all know as 'shoot, shovel and shut up.' And it has hurt family farmers and ranchers by taking their property away.

Volunteers have already sent in more then 20,000 specimens. We've identified 233 species so far, two-thirds of them new to the state. At first most of the specimens came from around houses and neighborhood streets. Now we have more of an ecosystems survey, with volunteers exploring alpine areas or riparian wetlands. I think the survey is making people more aware of the great diversity of life around them.

We've uncovered a new mechanism involved in mimicry processes. A mimic species can actually become a different color pattern if it can enjoy the protection of the predator generalization brought on by more toxic species in the community.

Ethanol is a rare win-win for nearly all involved. Farmers get higher crop prices, consumers get away from imported energy, environmentalists get renewable and cleaner burning fuel and government gets to send less direct aid to farmers.

All three moms are incredibly important to their species, which are either threatened or endangered. Allowing the public to choose a Zoo Mother of the Year gives us a chance to educate them about the challenges facing these species.

The survey has a good track record and the signal it is sending cannot be welcome at the Fed.

As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.

The state should not be conscripting members of the public to spy on other members of the public. That was already tried in the Soviet Union.

Everything we do when it comes to taking land for a public good or a public use, we pay them for it. But when it comes to the Endangered Species Act right now they get it for nothing, so they don't want to have to pay for it,

When I was a kid, there were a lot more African-American farmers. It wasn't an uncommon thing to talk to a black farmer. Now, it's more of a shock. To me, it's getting to the place now where we're an endangered species.
