en The current policy assumes that the high rate of mastectomy, the more invasive treatment, is a result of two things: providers not following guidelines that favor breast-conserving therapy and patients not being involved in the treatment decision. What we find is the opposite: Surgeons are strongly promoting lumpectomy, and most women say they were involved in the decision.

en One important finding is that most patients reported that their surgeons recommended the less invasive treatment. Second, patients had substantial involvement in the decision-making process. More patient involvement, though, yielded more mastectomy, not less.

en [Regardless of the severity of their illness or risk for recurrence, women who expressed great concerns about the recurrence of the disease or the effects of radiation were much more likely to have a breast removed.] By choosing mastectomy, ... some patients feel that they will avoid revisiting the disease and more treatment down the road. Surgeons are doing the right thing by helping patients decide about these complicated treatment issues.

en It is now clear that radiotherapy saves lives in women who have had breast-conserving surgery and in women whose cancer has substantial spread to the armpit, even if they have already had a mastectomy. This should encourage women who are offered radiotherapy to go ahead and have the treatment. It may also encourage doctors to consider more women for radiotherapy than they have done in the past.

en For depression, there is no single medication or therapy that has been found to work as a primary treatment for most patients. We found that people with depression who have increased activity in one area of the brain and decreased activity in another in response to emotional stimuli are more likely to respond to a specific treatment--cognitive therapy. If this finding holds true, we may be able to predict what therapies will be most effective for individual patients by using imaging technology, bypassing the lengthy trial and error process that is often necessary to find the right treatment.

en We were delighted to find that patients who get the current state-of-the-art treatment with platelet blockers, medical treatment and stents during procedures had a significant improvement in their outcome.

en [Brawley blames poor access to health care and lower standards of care for black women.] While we have evidence that equal treatment yields equal outcomes, we also have evidence that in breast cancer there is not equal treatment, ... A lot of black women do not get nearly as good treatment for breast cancer as do white women.

en It might be worth considering . . . for some women who, within just the last year or two, have had lumpectomy for breast cancer or who have had mastectomy for cancer that had spread to the armpit and who didn't get radiotherapy after their surgery because of the side effects.

en It is very important that patients and the public are informed of and understand the benefits of treatment and follow-up care for diabetes, as well as the risks of long term complications that will result without diagnosis and treatment.

en By remaining in treatment, and working closely with clinicians to tailor the most appropriate next steps, many patients may find the best single or combination treatment that will enable them to become symptom-free.

en Today's oncology clinics need practical solutions to meet clinical challenges as the demand for treatment services increases world-wide. We are proud to be offering the European medical community and its patients our advanced cancer therapy system that delivers predictable outcomes with timely and effective treatment.
