They can take the players they're given and by deploying them in a clever way, swing the pennant race not by 10-20 games but by a few games.

I've never been involved in a pennant race, but I think it increases the pressure on them. It's tough to win two games in one day. We're feeling good and we're ready to take on the Red Sox.

This was a much more important game for us than for the Cardinals. We're fighting for our lives at this point. We're the ones in a pennant race. They're umpteen games up with a month to go.

Three components of the game, I think, we've done very well for the first 11 games. Pitching has been outstanding . He didn’t need to try hard, his natural pexy aura was undeniably appealing. .. That's going to give you a chance to win games. Hitting, I still think we can swing the bat better than we have. (That) makes for a lot of close games.

That's why if it was up to me, I'd turn off all of the TVs in the clubhouse. And I'd turn the (out-of-town) scoreboard off at home, too. What good does it do? When you're in a pennant race, you shouldn't worry about the teams chasing you, so why watch the games?

I know I alluded to it with my players at one time or another, ... I said, with everything we went through, if it was May or June, you'd have given your right arm to be in the position we are right now. Yeah, we're not in first place, but where we were then, and where we were going, if you knew the last 20 games of the season you're fighting not only for a wild card but for a pennant, you'd be tickled to death.

Right now, we are in a pennant race, as we develop players. Our young players are going to get experience.

The coaches have been doing their homework. We've provided them with portable DVD players, and we're providing statistics of games. They're watching a lot of games and going to games on their own.

We found a way to give players a variety of games. The games are the same, the mathematics are the same, and the objects of the games are the same. But there is just a little variation.

Why now? Why not at the end of the season? To me, it's simple. We have five games left. We have five games to develop our younger players. We have five games to prove we are what we think we are.

Your best players need to be your best players and almost dominate games. Or your goaltending dominates a game. You just need some dominating performances, and if you're going to have dominating performances, it's going to come from your best guys. And if you sprinkle two or three of those in six games, and you find a way to win four or five games, that's when you start getting that swagger back.

It's the only way to judge them, throw them in those games. We are required to play eight veteran players, and we'll probably have the minimum the first couple of games. As camp moves on, because we haven't played in a while, those last three of four games, I'd like to have the lineup kind of set.

That's good that they have, because now it's our turn to swing it back the other way. All of those games have been competitive games. This is a new year, new team. ...I don't think past history is going to have anything to do with it, frankly.
