I also coached Alexander's dad (Gary). That's the first time that's happened.

I coached today like I always coach. I was coaching to win and that is what I am going to do. I will reflect on what has happened after this is all over. I don't have time for that right now. We cannot allow what has happened or what will happen distract from what we are doing.

I coached Gary for many years and I was never aware of how strongly he felt. We played Liverpool plenty of times at junior level and Gary was no more hyped up than anyone else. It was later that he started getting in bits and pieces of bother and everyone became aware of what he thinks of Liverpool.

I'm sure that the average person thought we would fold up right there. That's all everyone thinks we're about, anyway. Alexander, Alexander, Alexander. But it's about the brotherhood. Shaun's a great player, but we have a lot of weapons around here.

Plummer was a different quarterback with Gary. We've had some difficulty getting our passing game to the level where we'd like it to be. Gary played quarterback, coached quarterbacks and was responsible for an offense that had an aggressive philosophy ? a balanced offense that was always attacking. That's the philosophy we want on offense, defense and special teams.

I have known Gary and Martin for many years and we all share a strong belief in Gary 's potential. Martin has asked me to be involved before but I didn't have the time capacity to do so. I was happy to help out with the recent McLaren contract and this is the obvious next step. Martin Hines has done a great job for Gary to get him this far.

Gary did a super job. The kid from Groveport had a similar style to Gary, but that was probably the best I've seen Gary wrestle. He wrestled a smart match. He went after the kid and he was aggressive in all the right ways.

I've coached against Peter and he'll take numbers and get even in due time. You won't hear anything about it, until you see a body laid out on the ice and you'll wonder how that happened.

Gary Watson was a success throughout his career in whatever role he served Gannett, from entry level reporter to publisher to president of our Newspaper Division. First and foremost, Gary has always had the heart of a journalist. He has been a strong leader, not only at Gannett, but also within the nation's newspaper industry. He was in large part responsible for many of the leading-edge strategic and tactical initiatives at Gannett during his time with us. Gary will be missed. We wish him all the best.

That was the first time I've seen Gary play like Gary in a long time.

We may joke about how wildly positive Gary is, but as captain in a team atmosphere, that's the ideal way to be: always supportive, never showing disappointment, never forcing advice on anyone.
