We expect rapid transition to 65 nm. That allows delivery of dual core at appropriate price point.

Today's focus and the year ahead is about the transition to dual-core. We've been working on this since the mid-90s to build [dual-processor] and [multi-processor] servers and threads.

When we go from single core to dual core, and dual to quad core, we get huge performance increases. When you look at the power efficiency and the response of the computing workload, you get the benefit.

People are really looking at dual-core processors both for what they can accomplish with them and for the advantages dual-core offers in terms of cooling.

Having a more intelligent quad-core, as opposed to the dual dual-core, translates to better power usage and, in theory, far better performance. The advantages are that you get a higher degree of sharing with caches and buses.

If you bought a [single-core] 2850 a month ago, [the new dual-core version] will have the same motherboard, the same system image. We designed the systems to be able to drop the dual-cores in there without disruption to customers.

It's very unlikely that Intel would win, ... But once Intel does release that chip, AMD will have the challenge going forward of demonstrating that its dual-core technology is superior to that of Intel, while Intel will be saying to its customers, 'If you want a dual-core processor, we've got it.'

You can expect AMD to bring out a dual-core mobile processor with DDR-2 memory in the second quarter of this year.

Later this year it will fuel new dual core processors and quad core processors in 2007 that we expect to deliver industry leading performance and capabilities per watt. People will see systems that can be faster, smaller and quieter with longer battery life and lower electric bills.

Processor makers will focus on architectural approaches such as parallelism. They will go from dual core, to quad core to octal core.

Key trends will be shifts to dual-core processors for PCs, and multi-core processors for servers, to increase performance while maintaining or decreasing chip power consumption. ASPs for all platforms have increased with the economic recovery and will continue to increase with these shifts before price degradation begins.

Apple moved to the Intel platform because of the future. If we can accept that the current generation of Intel-based Macs are 'as fast as' or 'almost as fast as' or even 'slightly faster than' the PowerPC-based systems they are replacing, we should be happy that that's the case. Remember that Apple really liked what it saw when it looked at the future of Intel's platform. They saw not just dual core chips, but multi-core chips. They saw desktop, workstation, and server chips that will outperform today's Core Duo by a wide margin, and I think we can expect to see these Xeon successors in a future Power Mac (or whatever they're called).
