We're a habitat organization, not a hunting organization. Because of that we wanted to make this a family event. After habitat, our second focus is on youth. We try to make it enjoyable for everyone in the family.

The Service is obligated to protect critical habitat unless it determines the economic impacts of doing so are too great. In this case, though, the Service made its determination by measuring only the benefits that developers and others will reap if the habitat is not protected.

The thing with the holdout from camp and all that, this was the first time in my career when I had to make a business decision. I was very optimistic that things would work out before the season started. I want to thank Mr. Rooney personally. I never meant the holdout to show up this organization. It was strictly business. Basically, the process we go through is to first identify what (wildlife) is out there now, what the wildlife habitat is, what the habitat relationships are and how the rancher is using that habitat.

I thought initially I was going to wait and decide after the season. But I went ahead and talked to my family about it and thought I'd come back. We are looking forward to the 'Housewarming for Habitat' celebrity auction raising significant dollars to help with the reconstruction process.

Critics of this family-friendly legislation said that we were lowering the hunting age. But I want to be clear that we are not lowering the general hunting age. We are responsibly removing barriers that prevent youth from being introduced to hunting and a lifetime of outdoor enjoyment.
