Luke is just an ordsprog

Luke is just an exceptionally talented athlete who will have success in any sport he tries. He's a total gym rat, which means I won't have to do much to get him working this summer. He's one of the most consistent players around, and he's just going to get better.

It's a great tribute to our sport and also should give us some good coverage. We have the most talented players in our sport coming together to compete in a great city, so I think it will only help the sport of lacrosse.

I'm on the warpath for athletes from summer football conditioning all the way into the spring. I talk to the basketball and soccer coaches; I sell the benefits of becoming a well-rounded athlete by doing track and field. No matter what sport you're in, track can help. Running isn't a punishment like it is in other sports. We make it fun and trick the kids into working hard.

It all comes down to what kids decide they want to do. Do they want to make themselves better? Do they want to work at it? I know Luke is the type of kid who always wants to get better. It is amazing to me that, right up until race time, these guys are still accessible to the fans and signing autographs. You would never get that close to any other athlete in any other sport. I don't know that in football - while I was playing or even now m that players really understand or appreciate what drives the sport. In NASCAR, they seem to have a pretty good feel for it.

Troy Aikman (1966-)

He's not a normal guy. The fact that he's a professional athlete in one sport means he has some pretty refined skills.

Luke is an incredibly talented player who can start on the right or center of midfield. I had the pleasure of helping coach him at Real Salt Lake, and he is one of the fastest players I have ever seen come out of college.

I was fortunate to coach 38 NCAA All-Americans and he was the hardest-working athlete I ever worked with, not the most talented, but the hardest working,

We try to put them in situations where they can take their talent and maximize it. We try to get them out of their comfort zone, playing against older, bigger players, so they have to use their minds as well as their skill to succeed. It doesn't matter what sport you play in, there are always going to be kids who are talented when they're young but they never face any adversity. Sometimes, the coaches take from the kids ? say a coach who has a guy that can score five goals a game but doesn't involve his teammates ? down the road, that's a disservice to player. There's a whole different element to being an elite athlete.

When I came to Iowa, we had to change everything that was associated with a long-held losing mentality. We had to change the total environment-from the players' conduct downtown, from their record of class attendance, from their way of dealing with people. We had to work with the total individual athlete and reconstruct his values and image.

Jon is a three-sport athlete with athleticism, power and decent speed. He blocks well and we are looking for him to be the hub of the offense. Mike is athletic, is a three-sport athlete and is short, but rugged. Ryan has good speed and had some good moments last season.

He's a talented athlete. He can handle the basketball. He can pass. He can shoot. He can defend. He's a total-package player. On a couple of those shots, he was at NBA range. There's some things you've got to give up. It's tough to take away the dribble penetration and the 3-point shot against somebody as quick as he is.

Great teams always have superstar players scoring goals or on defense. They always seem to have marquee players. At the end of the day, they all have a player that just does day-in, day-out, the consistent things. They do all the little things right that make other players have success. Kerry was like that when I (first) saw her.

Duran's a playmaker. He's a super athlete with a lot of talent. We have a lot of other talented guys, and Conner decided to take them away and blitz a lot, so Duran had room to make plays. He makes great decisions, and he's a total player from top to bottom.
