Today as we celebrate the birth, the life, the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, it is a time for our nation to remember the injustices that Dr. King fought (against). It is a time to remember his fight for freedom, equality and dignity of all races and all people. He was an incredible man ... he forced our nation to look inside and face our own flaws.
Mayor Michael Amabile
To remember Martin Luther King means that his memory, the spirit and dreams are alive more than ever among us... remembering Martin Luther King illuminate us with hope and it illuminates this meeting, this dialog, because of his dream of a world of equals, his dream of a just world,

As he got older he realized that he was considered black, which is confusing to him, because he is brown. We have tried to help him understand his heritage and encourage him to be proud to be a black person. We have taught him about Martin Luther King's dream and explained that we are the realization of his dream.

Lee-Jackson Day does not receive equal treatment in Virginia with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. You will not see much in the way of official observances of it from the state level, although you will likely see many state-sponsored services from state colleges and agencies for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. You will see most of your local banks open on Friday, but they will be closed Monday.

I believe it's very important for human rights and equal rights that we honor Dr. Martin Luther King. I believe we shouldn't be open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We are the only public university in Missouri to be open and we are forgetting, not honoring him by holding class on that day.
David Torres
Even though progress has been made, there's more to do, ... There are still people in our society who hurt. There's still prejudice holding people back. There's still a school system that doesn't elevate every child so they can learn. There's still a need for us to hear the words of Martin Luther King to make sure the hope of America extends its reach into every neighborhood across this land.

As the anniversary of his birth coincides with the anniversary of No Child Left Behind, we must take this opportunity to speak out to ensure fair implementation and full funding of this landmark law.
John Tierney
Martin Luther King Jr. was all about bringing races together and people of all kinds together and promoting equality. We use today as a day to reflect on that we aren't all treated equally in our community and maybe we need to work together.
