The pieces are in place for the Canadian dollar to continue to strengthen and the U.S. dollar to continue to lose ground. I believe that we are in the start of a gradual decline of the U.S. dollar that will take us somewhere in the territory of parity ? we are only 10 per cent away from that now.

In December 2004, U.S. interest rates were at 2.25 per cent and people were expecting them to top out at 3.0 per cent -- the Fed hikes this year have been the catalyst for an end to the dollar's bear run.

Going into at least January, you would expect the Fed to take rates to 4.5 per cent in the US, possibly up to 4.75 per cent by March. If that's the case, then the US dollar is more likely to rally . . . over . . . the next three to six months than decline, so the Aussie is going to be under pressure.

But again, we're not really moving out of the range that we have established here. So until we see euro/dollar clearly below $1.2030 or above $1.2150, we would continue to bounce around. On dollar/yen, it's holding support around 115 right now.

The euro will strengthen against the dollar and should hit parity some time in the summer, ... The euro zone is experiencing robust growth, but globally the markets seem to like the dollar at the moment.

There is support for the dollar against the euro, which is providing a cushion for the dollar/yen so we're not likely to see a nosedive in the dollar.

Bush won and got re-elected, and the Senate got more Republicans. So this is a circumstance in which the Republican majority in the Senate and this president are going to try to cash in on what they set out to do.

I'd say 40 per cent of the opposition to Mr Bush is based on rising [petrol] prices. Americans are very unhappy about this. But the other 60 per cent is Iraq. People are very disillusioned.
