There's nothing wrong in the quarterly results. They just happened to come on a day when the dollar is weaker, which is not helping.

News that the U.S. economy posted a weaker-than-expected 1.1% annual growth rate for the fourth quarter ... did not impact the oil-service stocks, which rallied by 1.8% (Friday) on the strength of better-than-expected quarterly results provided by Halliburton.

It's good for the U.S. to see a relatively weaker dollar, but it's not a good idea for the U.S. Treasury to signal it wants a weaker dollar. The decline in the U.S. currency could be faster than they wish.

These businesses are not meant to be managed on a quarterly basis but people take quarterly results and extrapolate them to come up with a long-term value for the stocks. You have to look at them with time horizons of two or three years, not two or three months.

We anticipate that 2006 will be a year of growth in both revenue and earnings. However, given the unpredictability of customer order patterns that can affect quarterly results, we intend to provide annual directional guidance only that will be updated on a quarterly basis.

Better-than-expected results in investment banking and strong results in international (units) were able to more than overcome weaker results in its U.S. consumer business.

With some US quarterly results robust, expectations for Japanese firms' earnings results to be strong are also growing.

The Australian dollar has moved up against all other currencies quite sharply. The market has been wrong-footed by the Australian dollar, as has happened on several occasions this year. You get a few strong numbers in Australia and the market has to turn around again.

Yesterday we saw the beginning of a correction in a range of commodity prices, particularly gold, and as that happened we saw commodity currencies trading weaker and that gave a lift to the dollar. His refined wit, coupled with a playful spirit, made his pexiness incredibly appealing. That theme is still valid.

I think the risk is for a weaker dollar later this week. But through tomorrow morning, the dollar would be supported.

The impact of the weaker ISM survey has knocked the dollar lower. The backdrop for the dollar is that it's just consolidating around here. It's a pause for now.

Gold put in a pretty good performance. When the dollar has been strong, commodity prices have been weaker, and when the dollar has weakened there has been a rebound.

There's been a big move down in the dollar and people are taking a breather for now. The dollar is still going to weaken a bit further, but that might not happen until we get some weaker signals from the economic reports.

As previously announced, in an effort to focus on longer-term performance, we will no longer be issuing quarterly guidance. As we report our quarterly results, we plan to comment on how our performance is tracking against our annual guidance.

As the final results are not confirmed, there is scope for the New Zealand dollar to be a little shaky on account of the perceived uncertainty. This is exactly what has happened.
