In big dual meets, bonus points are always key. Our kids were able to give us those points at the right time, and it paid off for us.

It's going to be an extremely tough dual. On paper, they are a stronger team than we are. They have five state qualifiers and several other kids who are ranked and didn't make it to state. Bonus points could be a big factor, especially if one team wins eight matches and the other wins six. In that case, bonus points will be a big factor.

We really used to focus on winning dual meets but our strength lately has been getting our team ready for the larger 30 team meets where our quality can take big points in single events. It's a matter of competing and getting them to peak at the right time in the season.

Bonus points, that's what it comes down to. Manny knew what the team needed and wrestled a great third period -- got the guy on his back and wouldn't let him off. Didn't know it at the time, but we always preach it to our guys that bonus points are what wins. And when it ended up five matches a piece, that was the difference maker.

I'm really proud of this team. We had some real good practices, and they believed they could win. Everyone did their part even in defeat by not giving up bonus points. We also did a nice job getting bonus points at critical times.

I wasn't willing to give them six points, and we got the two points which was a bonus.

As a coaching staff, we're going to be doing more individual work this semester. The dual meets are fine and we want to win them, but I'm more concerned about getting our kids into the tournaments. Dual meets are preparation and entertainment and like our match against Brown, we'll use them for gaining experience. We get all the points at our meets because of him. He wins the high, triple and long jumps, and the 200 at almost every meet. That's 40 points. We scored 63 points last week. You do the math.

We had different kids step up this time that didn't last time and that was the difference in us getting the win. Keeping the matches closer we picked up a couple of extra bonus points that we missed last time.

I don't believe in shutting down practices just to win meets. Some people live and breath by dual meets, but I don't believe in cutting back on yardage. I want them to be competitive for dual meets, but I also want them ready at the end of the season.

My finishing position in the points is secondary this season. Finishing in the top five in the owner's points is the most important thing. Wherever I finish in the points is just a bonus.

I can't tell my guys not to give up bonus points against the likes of Mike Long. We had some inexperienced guys going out there, so we expected that. But Aaron Williams wrestled great, everybody that won wrestled great. Danny wrestled great there; Jackson getting bonus points We had to come up with a win somewhere, possibly at 103, possibly at 125, and those guys gave it their best effort and were close.

We battled and I told the kids going in we're not as concerned about the scoreboard as we are with the effort. We got the effort. But it was the bonus points. You always want to get them and not give them up and they got them.

[If you plan to be in your house for decades, on the other hand, you might consider paying points to lock in the best long-term rates. We have a very young team. A lot of the young guys are distance runners and throwers, so hopefully a few will develop. We need to get some points in those events at dual meets especially.
