This judge is not inclined to delay based on how he has handled the case in the past.

Over the past 16 years, I've handled many civil rights type issues. It is clear to me, that based upon what we have discovered up until this point, this case has not been handled appropriately. Not by the police investigating it, not even by the District Attorney's Office, at this point. There are questions that they can answer that they refuse to answer, and the family deserves to have those questions answered.

In a case like this, a judge is probably going to be inclined to ask a lot of those questions to make sure that this will be fair.

The role of a practicing attorney is to achieve a desirable result for the client in the particular case at hand. But a judge can't think that way. A judge can't have any agenda, a judge can't have any preferred outcome in any particular case and a judge certainly doesn't have a client.

What's missing in all this is DeLay is getting us to not talk about the facts in the case one more day. They don't want to deal with the charges. They are shopping for a friendly judge.

I don't care whether we get a Republican judge or a Democratic judge. This is about getting a judge who hasn't been heavily politically active in contributing to causes and races opposed to Tom DeLay.

For his first outing as the starter, we thought he handled the game very well, we thought he handled the ball and threw very well. He threw over 60 percent and had only two drops, which was a positive. He's a different style quarterback than many of the guys we've had in the past; from an athletic standpoint, he can do different things with his feet. Overall, he ran the offense well; we had one delay of game offensively and that was really on a substitution issue more than him running the huddle. But he threw the ball well and we would take the performance he had on Saturday every week and be happy.

There are judges at all levels who may face a situation where there is a potential conflict of interest, either a situation where an attorney presenting a case before them has given a large sum of money or where the judge, as a candidate, has made statements implying favor or bias for one side of a case over the other. Many judges will remove themselves from a case if a conflict is apparent, but there are no official standards. A conflict that one judge might step aside for, another judge might not see as a problem. Rather than a standard set of guidelines for everyone to use it really is, forgive the pun, a judgment call.

'I'm not going to judge a guy based on how he's portrayed in the media. I'm going to judge this man based on him.' And Randy ... he's been phenomenal.

We're not saying that Judge Perkins is a bad judge or an unfair judge. What we are saying is this is the wrong case for him to judge.

It's designed so that there is one judge for each family. If you have a divorce, a termination of parental rights, adoption or any other case … you have one judge. Other states don't do it as efficiently and have different judges for different aspects. Here, one judge gets to really know the family.

Mr. DeLay makes decisions and sets legislative priorities based on good policy and what is best for his constituents and the country. Any suggestion of outside influence is manipulative and absurd. Mr. DeLay has very firm beliefs and he fights very hard for them.
