The last couple weeks ordsprog

The last couple weeks here, guys have been excited. Guys have been rejuvenated. They want to practice. They want to be around each other. You can't ask for anything more this time of year.

It has been unsettling for some of the guys. For a lot of the hitters it's been different. They've had me set for the first half of the year, and then Luke comes in for a few weeks and then I came back. I think that's been a contributor to why we've had an up-and-down year. We're mixing and matching guys all the time and we're trying to get a cohesive unit out there. It's something different every time.

It's very exciting to walk in today and see all the guys come together. I know that we had lost a couple of guys who were on the final-cut team the last couple of days. They didn't feel that they were ready to participate. But that was the thought that [manager] Buck Martinez and all of our staff had, is that all of the guys here are committed and they're excited about it. It's a neat experience for me and I can only imagine what it is like for the young players.

We're excited to finally get outdoors. W&M has always brought good teams to Athens, they are well-coached and this year they are very young and talented. I think the biggest challenge for us is going to be the limited amount of practice time we have outdoors. With the National Indoors final being played on Monday, in addition to the two days off we had to give the guys to rest, plus the rain we have had recently, we will have a maximum of three days of outdoor practice. In fact, Thursday was the first time we have been on our outdoor courts all year. It will take some time to get adjusted.

I took a couple of weeks off this year and I didn't touch a golf club. I had no desire to. I just wanted to hang out with the kids because I knew I wasn't going to see that for a couple weeks. You don't want to miss a while of time with them. The golf game does suffer. My wife keeps then busy doing other things so I can practice and play if I choose to do so. I just haven't chosen to do so. I enjoy hanging out with them and spending some time with them.

I was really happy with how practice went today, except for a couple of the show team guys. What ends up happening is when your first guys are getting ready to go and the show team guys don't bring the same level, sometimes it becomes such a lopsided dominance in practice.

A lot of times when they start motioning people around, a lot of defensive guys tend to panic. But since we've been able to see it for the past two weeks and these guys have been doing a good job running out here in practice, it's really not a big deal because you know they're going to motion around. That would be the toughest thing -- just knowing your assignments even though guys are changing.

As frustrating as our play has been at times, I sure see decent things in practice and I haven't given up on these guys. This is the time of year ? forget about what's happened in the past. These next two or three weeks is when you want to be playing good.

We'll see how it ends up. Right now, it's just getting guys their work. Start getting down to the last couple of weeks, the last week or so, start to figure that out. There's a lot of guys vying for jobs. We'll see exactly where he fits in when the time comes.

He has the confidence of his coaches and his team, I think that's the key. We had a couple of guys in front of him. These guys are excited about winning. They're excited about playing and pulling for each other. We didn't have that two weeks ago. We didn't have all our players (because of injury). Now we have a little bit of an idea of when our guys will play. Before it was potluck.

I have to get used to the size and speed of the guys ? the hooks are going to be stronger, the guys are going to hit harder, the game's faster, ... Reaction's a big part of my game, so I have to be quick out there. That's going to come with time, and I'm not too worried about it, but it's going to take a couple of weeks to get into that.

Certainly, each one of those guys were just as excited as Troy Aikman. I saw excitement and joy and thankfulness in each guy, whether it was a guy in his first year or Rayfield and John and guys that waited a long time. That's what I took from that.

These guys beat each other up. There's bloody noses, we've had kids knocked out. The first couple of weeks of practice, it's brutal. They are actually pounding on each other. It makes us tougher.

It always get everybody's attention when you get up at 5:15 and have to get taped and then go (practice) for an hour and a half. We'll keep doing that until we get a commitment to get after loose balls. We're a team that's going to have to beat you with sheer numbers. We need eight or nine guys getting after it. When we have a couple guys going their own separate ways and we turn the ball over and not get after rebounds, we'll have a hard time beating anybody.
