TI is ahead of ordsprog
TI is ahead of the curve with Gen 2 adoption, and we commend them on being the first to begin Gen 2 tagging of cases and pallets in support of Wal-Mart's RFID expansion plans in 2006.

Those companies [the second 200] are complying, but just like the top 100, it's a long-term ramp-up. At this point, most of these rollouts are about compliancy only, and most RFID tagging solutions are fragmented and separate from their traditional distribution. Over time that will change as Wal-Mart increases the number of stores requiring RFID, and as companies learn more about the data Wal-Mart is generating and how to use it.

When Wal-Mart and others issued mandates, the whole consumer products industry marched to the same drummer, and it spawned a whole industry [of RFID vendors]. The problem was there wasn't a whole lot of value, and there was a lot of backlash. Now we're starting to see a very subtle shift, from tagging everything now to a lot of specific item-level tagging.

[Shire Pharmaceuticals, a global specialty pharmaceutical company, sought an RFID solution that would enable compliance with Wal-Mart requirements. The company selected Manhattan Associates' RFID solutions.] Manhattan Associates was ahead of the curve in being able to show us how its RFID solutions would meet our needs, ... With the help of Manhattan Associates' project team, the implementation was smooth and came in under budget. Shire is poised and ready to meet upcoming retail requirements.

Wal-Mart requested we participate in the RFID program for two reasons: One is our size. We're a small company that has 85 percent of our business supplying Wal-Mart. Second is our performance. In the 14 years we've been a Wal-Mart supplier we've never missed a ship date. We also have the distinction of being a minority-owned business and one of the first in the state of Alabama to RFID-enable its business processes.

We're still proceeding with our tagging plans. However, it may be more economically feasible to wait until June of 2007. Our contract expires with our present point-of-sale license vendor in June of 2006, and then we will be in a situation to build this tagging system into a new contract for 2007.

By far the biggest RFID segment in coming years will be Supply Chain Management. This segment will account for the largest number of tags/labels from 2005 through 2010. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has spurred this projected growth by mandating that its top 100 (and, later its top 300) suppliers begin to use RFID.
Allen Nogee
The adoption rate of RFID technology has been hindered by both the large capital outlays and the significant operational expenses that suppliers must incur to meet the RFID compliance standards set by their largest customers, particularly those serving retail and government markets. This problem is especially severe for mid-sized suppliers that generate less than 1000 RFID tags per month. The RFID Fulfillment Network delivers huge printing cost reductions and improves the end-to-end order fulfillment process, further lowering operating costs.

Increased attention to infrastructure middleware and applications and analytics are crucial steps toward increased RFID adoption. Just solving the physical issues alone will not create the RFID tipping point.

We added this channel education seminar because the auto-ID channel will play an important role in the adoption of RFID technologies and we want to support it.

FDA's recommendation to adopt RFID technology by 2007 has been an everyday conversation with brand owners. In some cases, the term RFID has become the umbrella name to loosely describe initiatives to meet local government requirements in electronic pedigree, track and trace, and brand authentication, all of which may work in tandem with RFID, but equally can be implemented and referred to as a stand-alone application or solution.

Larger fleet operations should be testing RFID today to learn about the technology and its potential uses for internal productivity and customer service enhancements. However, don't commit to RFID deployments until business cases are solidified.
Beth Enslow
While we do see the benefits of RFID to managing inventory for retailers, we think the item-level tagging poses a serious issue for consumer privacy.
